Hathorn sets record, keeps Bears unbeaten

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Heather Hathorn scored three goals, surpassing the University of Maine women’s soccer team record for career goals, as the Black Bears shut down Charleston Southern 7-0 Saturday.

Hathorn, a Scarborough native, scored her first goal of the game 8:54 into the first half, tying Sophie Lecot’s record with 20. Less than six minutes later Hathorn scored again to break the mark. She also moved into second place on the all-time points list with 49.

Marie-Andree Canuel added two goals. Maureen McHugh and Elise Tibbetts each contributed a goal. Jasmine Phillips made one save on two shots for 4-0 Maine.

Miki Wilson stopped six of 22 shots for 1-3 Charleston Southern.

Wheaton 7, Husson 0

At Norton, Mass., Erin Brennan, Lauren Konopka, and Carolyn Wills all netted two goals to help Wheaton College past Husson College.

Katie Hall scored a goal for 2-0 Wheaton and Jordan Pouliot had three assists. Emily Lipsky made one save.

Leah Drew and Gabby Schrage combined to make six saves for 0-1 Husson.

Wisconsin-La Crosse 2, USM 1

At Gorham Saturday, the Eagles earned the win when a ball slipped into the goal off a Southern Maine defender.

Meghan Berger tied the game with a goal less than three minutes after Amanda Valeriani gave the Huskies an early lead 7:06 minutes into the game. Eva Hanson assisted on the USM goal.

Ansley faced 16 shots and saved 11 for 0-1 Southern Maine. Stephanie Harbaugh made five saves on six shots for Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Southern Maine 0, Fredonia 0

At Gorham, the Huskies and the Blue Devils played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer Sunday afternoon in the Southern Maine Invitational.

Marcy Ansley for 0-1-1 USM faced 11 shots and saved three, while her defense cleared two balls off the line.

Brianna Falvey had four saves on 10 shots for 1-1-1 SUNY-Fredonia.

MMA 2, St. Joseph’s (Conn.) 1

At Castine, Amy Asselin scored twice on Jessica Taylor assists including the game-winner at 70:32 to give the Mariners the victory.

Meghan Marshall made five saves on six shots for Maine Maritime Academy.

Atlantic Baptist wins tourney

At Fort Kent Sunday, Atlantic Baptist topped Lyndon State after one round of penalty kicks to take the Bengal Kick Off tourney title. UMaine-Machias rolled to a 5-0 win over UM-Fort Kent in the consolation game.

Lyndon State beat UMM 4-3 and Atlantic Baptist defeated UMFK 2-1 Saturday to advance to the championship.

Atlantic Baptist had a 3-1 edge in penalty kicks thanks in part to tourney MVP Darby Thibodeau who made 16 saves on 21 shots and scored during the penalty kick round.

Christina Rich scored four goals for the Clippers in the consolation game and Cathy Wilson added a goal and an assist. UMM’s Angela Qualey made six saves on eight shots while UMFK’s Kara Jackson stopped 18 of 25 shots.

In Saturday’s first game, Darcy Leblanc scored the game-winner and Meg Skidmore added three goals. Lindsay Maquire made 10 saves on 20 shots and Qualey stopped eight of 25.

In Saturday’s second game, Sarah Haines had the eventual game-winner for Atlantic Baptist. Mackenzie Boucher scored for the Bengals. Jackson stopped 11 of 18 shots and Sara Burauer had 10 saves on 16 shots.

Maine Maritime 2, Mitchell 1

At Castine, Ben Tourangeau scored twice in the Mariners win.

Chad McDuffie helped with an assist and Josh Heath made eight saves on 21 shots for 1-0 MMA.

David Eddy scored 0-1 Mitchell’s only goal with an assist by Thaddeus Smith. Ryan Osmond saw 20 shots and saved seven.

Southern Maine 1, Union 0

At Clifton Park, N.Y., Sunday, Kevin Colwell converted a pass from Zach Rossignol at the 15-minute mark as the Huskies defeated Union.

Chris Willard saved all four shots he faced for 1-0-1 USM.

Kevin O’Connor made one save on 18 shots for 1-1 Union.

Mitchell 1, Thomas 0

At Waterville Sunday, Chris Flarerty scored on a direct kick with 38 minutes left to give Mitchell the win.

Thaddeus Smith stopped eight of 19 shots for 1-1 Mitchell.

Ryan Conrad and Philip Bailey combined for 11 saves on 18 shots for 0-1 Thomas.

UM-Machias wins tourney

At Fort Kent Sunday, Galen Light tallied the winning penalty kick as UMaine-Machias edged UM-Fort Kent after a scoreless regulation and overtime in the championship game of the Bengal Kick Off tournament.

Lyndon State and UM-Presque Isle played to a 1-1 tie in Sunday’s consolation game. UMM beat UMPU 4-1 in Saturday’s first game and UMFK tipped Lyndon 1-0 in the second game.

In the championship game, the Clippers beat the Bengals 3-2 in penalty kicks. UMFK’s Nicholas Thibodeau made 13 saves on 21 shots during field play while UMM’s Andy Swift had 15 saves on 23 shots. Howard Gray of UMM was the tourney MVP.

In the consolation game, Travis Parent tied the game for the Owls in the 76th minute, one minute after Lyndon State’s Barry Sykes scored. Lyndon State’s Jake Toof had 11 saves on 13 shots while Jay Johnson stopped 13 of 16 shots for UMPI.

In Saturday’s first game, Steve Mill and Evan Timrsk each had a goal and an assist for the Clippers while Ryan Lamoreau scored for the Owls. Swift stopped five of 10 shots and UMPI’s Mike Latchford stopped eight of 21.

In Saturday’s second game, Rob Rochester tallied a goal in the 84th minute to lift the Bengals. Thibodeau had seven saves on 10 shots.

Field hockey

Providence 3, Maine 2 (OT)

At Orono Sunday, Amy Phillips scored on a Melissa McGow assist 14:36 into overtime to give Providence a win.

Phillips scored in the first half to give the 1-3 Friars an early lead. McGow added a goal and an assist and Meredith Jones made 10 saves on 12 shots.

Amie Dubois and Rachael Hilgar each scored a goal for 2-2 Maine. Joanna Fernandez and Shaunessy Saucier both had an assist as Jamie Morin blocked seven of 10 shots.

Plymouth State 7, Thomas 1

At Waterville Saturday, Katie Kovacs and Amanda Gutowski each knocked in two goals as Plymouth State rolled.

Lilly Silva, Heidi Hand, and Melanie Dixon each netted a goal for 1-0 Plymouth State and Katie Randall blocked four of 11 shots.

Meredith Arute scored on a penalty stroke in the second half for 0-1 Thomas and Jen Lane made 24 saves on 42 shots.

Gordon 4, UM-Farmington 2

At Wenham, Mass., Megan Benevides scored two goals to lead Gordon College to the win on Saturday.

Whitney Plaster scored an goal and assisted another for Gordon and Brittney Nanni netted a goal. Kendra Davis made seven saves.

Kristy Veazie scored both goals for the Beavers. Kristin Allen and Kristi Cochin each had an assist. Ashleigh Biette saved 11 shots.

Utica 4, Southern Maine 0

At Canton N.Y., Saturday, Shannon Rohacek scored a pair of goals and added an assist to led the Lady Pioneers to a 4-0 win in the season opener for both teams.

Freshman Laurie Calvasina scored the first goal at 3:52 and Carla Behe scored an unassisted goal for Utica. Jenny Lounsbury faced only one shot and did not need to make any saves.

Sadie Garnache-Poirer stopped 13 of 27 shots for the Huskies.

Oneonta 3, Southern Maine 1

At Canton N.Y., Sunday, Kerry Birnstill converted a pass from Sarah Johnson just 2:07 into play to get the Dragons off to a fast start.

Katie O’Brien scored in the end of the first half and Musu Jackson-Buckner made in 3-0. Kelly Mohr and Lindsey Hendricks combined to face 5 shots, saving two for 2-0 Oneonta.

Freshman Erika Kroon netted the 0-2 Huskies first goal of the season and Sadie Garnache-Poirier made 10 saves on 32 shots.

Volleyball

Maine drops two

At Orono Saturday, the Black Bears pushed Portland State to four games at the Sea-Sun Invitational on Saturday evening but fell 3-1 (18-30, 30-26, 18-30, 26-30). Earlier in the day, Boston College topped Maine 3-0 (32-34, 14-30, 24-30).

In the day game, Maine was paced by junior Kalli Jordan who posted a match-high 17 kills. All-tourney team member Carmen Morgan tallied 14 kills and 14 digs while junior Leah Guidinger added 11 kills and 12 digs.

In the night game, Jordan tallied 11 kills and added 10 digs as the Bears fall to 1-3.
