U.S. military deaths during wartime (Military death toll passes 1,000)

U.S. military deaths in the Iraq war and past conflicts are listed below. Numbers include those killed in action as well as nonhostile deaths during in-theater operations. Source: U.S. Department of Defense.

IRAQ WAR: 1,000 troop deaths, plus three deaths of civilian employees of the Department of Defense, March 19, 2003, to Sept. 7, 2004.

AFGHAN WAR: 135 deaths from Oct. 7, 2001, through Sept. 3, 2004. (Figure includes some related deaths outside Afghanistan.)

PERSIAN GULF WAR: 382 deaths, 1990-1991.

VIETNAM WAR: 58,209 deaths, 1955-1975. (From the commencement date for the Military Assistance Advisory Group through the date the last American service member left Southeast Asia.)

KOREAN WAR: 36,574 deaths, 1950-1953.

WORLD WAR II: 405,399 deaths, 1941-1946.

WORLD WAR I: 116,516 deaths, 1917-1918.

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR: 2,446 deaths, 1898.

CIVIL WAR: 364,511 Union deaths and approximately 133,821 Confederate deaths, 1861-1865. (Authoritative Confederate casualties are not available.)

MEXICAN WAR: 13,283 deaths, 1846-1848.

WAR OF 1812: 2,260 deaths, 1812-1815.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR: 4,435 deaths, 1775-1783.
