Levant to mark Old Home Days, library opening Sept. 10-11

LEVANT – The Levant Old Home Days, set for Sept. 10-11, is planned to bring together members of the community.

The theme for the event this year is “Old Home Days 2004 – Dr. Seuss and Much, Much More” and will coincide with the grand opening of the Levant Heritage Library.

The library is located in the former post office building. This year a special postmark will be made available in recognition of the library’s opening.

Old Home Days will kick off officially at 6:30 p.m. today with a youth and adult talent show, which will be followed by a family dance. Parental supervision at the dance is required.

On Saturday, Old Home Days will begin with a Boy Scout Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Bemis Plaza, followed by a parade at 10 a.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m., while a book sale to benefit the library will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bemis Plaza, two Maine playwrights will read their contributions to a collection of plays. Sale of the book has gone to support the library.

Levant Elementary School will be home to activities and events throughout Saturday, from amusement rides to a car show, horseshoe and cribbage tournaments to a craft fair and children’s quarter fair.

Concession food and drink will be there as well, not to mention the results of a pie-baking contest.

The day also will feature juggling and balloon figures done by Zach Fields from 5 to 7 p.m. at the recreation fields on the Tay Road.

The two-day event will conclude about 9 p.m. with a fireworks display.
