HAMPDEN – For the second week in a row, Brewer’s offense couldn’t be contained, and the Witches’ defense did all of the containing.
Brewer picked up another win in the second weekend of the high school football season, earning a 47-0 victory over Hampden at the Weatherbee Complex field.
Last week’s victim was Old Town, which also couldn’t score against the Witches’ defense. The Broncos put up more of a fight Friday but Brewer’s 19-0 lead at the end of the first quarter made it hard for Hampden to mount a comeback.
The Witches spread out the offensive numbers with three players racking up more than 100 yards on the ground.
Kevin McAvoy paced Brewer with 136 yards on seven carries, most of which came on an 85-run touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Fellow running back Zack Wilson (106 yards on eight carries) and quarterback Ricky Porter (nine carries, 111 yards) were also key players in Brewer’s option offense.
“If a man comes up, I pitch and if he goes outside, I’m in,” Porter said. “It’s that simple.”
Porter’s runs and pitches to Wilson were all the more dangerous thanks to a passing game that showed up.
Porter was 4-for-4 while McAvoy completed a first-quarter option pass, a 15-yarder to Drew Francis in the first quarter that helped set up the Witches’ second scoring drive.
After the pass moved Brewer to HA’s 39-yard line, Porter pitched to Wilson for a 16-yard gain; McAvoy went off right tackle for 18 yards and Porter ran four yards for a 12-0 lead.
“The passing game is doing its job and getting us where we need to be,” Wilson said. “And we had some big holes. The whole line, every guy, did a great job.”
Two plays after Hampden got the ball back, Brewer’s Matt Wilson recovered a fumble at the Hampden 22. Two plays later McAvoy ran 10 yards for a touchdown.
The Witches ran for 201 yards in the first half.
“We had a lot of guys in position but we missed a lot of tackles,” Hampden coach John Sparacio said. “They have a little bit more speed than we do. We have to work more on tackling and staying home.”
Hampden managed 218 total yards, including 68 rushing yards on nine carries by halfback Jon Cirrinone.
But the Broncos were plagued by inopportune turnovers and trouble converting on third and fourth downs. Hampden had the ball at midfield early in the second quarter but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-2, handing the ball to Brewer and setting up a touchdown for the Witches.
The Broncs finally got deep into Brewer territory in the fourth quarter but two incomplete passes on third-and-8 from the Brewer 18 handed the ball back to Witches – who promptly got an 85-yard TD run from McAvoy.
“We watched the quarterback and tried to keep him in the pocket. The defense was important because we knew he was going to be throwing a lot,” Wilson said.
