Man’s Mass confusion leads to burglary charge

Police responding to a Bangor alarm at 11:18 p.m. Friday found an intoxicated Indian Island man who was out on bail rummaging through a cabinet at Beth El Congregation Synagogue on French Street.

When challenged, Shelden Snell, 33, told officers that he worked there and was getting ready for tomorrow’s Mass. He said he believed that he was in a Catholic church, according to police reports.

In Snell’s shirt pocket, officers found Jewish jewelry worth $145, with price tags still attached, and a 5 mg half tablet of Oxycodone.

A large rock had been thrown through the bathroom window. There was $150 of damage done to the window and a door.

Evidence pointed to Snell’s having visited the Broadway law firm of Leen and Emery at 11:04 p.m., but he allegedly was scared away by an alarm. His unique shoe prints were found inside the law firm, police reports said. Police estimated $200 of damage was done to window screens and the air conditioning system.

There were also signs that Snell had attempted to burglarize a Broadway apartment where the female tenant was inside. A screen had been removed from 80A Broadway. The tenant told police that the screen was still there when she had come home.

Snell was charged with three counts of burglary and with violation of his bail conditions, which allowed him no use or possession of alcohol or drugs.

A crying woman with scratches, abrasions, bite marks and blood on both arms was found in a Bangor driveway after officers investigated a 911 hang-up call made at 7:38 p.m. Saturday.

The Grove Street woman said that she and Michael Crossman, 28, had argued all day long, and that most of her injuries were from being grabbed and knocked down.

When the police arrived, Crossman became very agitated and swore at them, according to reports. He claimed that the woman had attacked him.

Her 5-year-old daughter was present during the fight but fled to a neighbor’s house for help, reports said.

Crossman was arrested on a charge of domestic assault. Bail was set at $500 cash and with the condition that he would not return to the residence or have contact with the woman.

A Maple Street man took a swing at a Bangor police officer as he was being arrested on a domestic assault charge at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Matthew Willette, 39, allegedly had pushed and shoved his girlfriend at their house. When she tried to call 911, he ripped the phone out of the wall, according to police reports.

When the police arrived, they found the woman in the driveway with the phone and Willette hiding inside the locked house. At first, he refused to open the door, and the woman gave the police permission to break in.

Willette then opened the door. When police told him to put his hands behind his back, he swung at an officer, grazing his right cheek, reports said.

Police reported that Willette was intoxicated and was “mouthy” on his ride to Penobscot County Jail.
