Rockland motorcyclist hurt in Liberty crash

LIBERTY – A Rockland man suffered a head injury Sunday in a motorcycle accident on Back Palermo Road near Route 220, according to a Maine State Police trooper who investigated the crash.

Raymond Weatherby, 59, was in the middle of a group of 20 motorcycles returning from the Toys for Tots motorcycle run in Windsor when the accident occurred, state police Trooper Stephen Hills said Sunday.

As Weatherby rounded a sharp curve on Back Palermo Road about a quarter-mile from Route 220, his 2002 Harley Davidson tilted over too far and the floorboard dug into the road, causing the bike to skid, witnesses told police.

Weatherby, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and suffered a head injury in the 4:40 p.m. crash, Hills said.

He was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital, Hills said. Hills believed Weatherby was to be transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Neither hospital had information on Weatherby.

According to Hills, Weatherby has no recollection of the accident, which occurred on a curve that is prone to accidents. Weatherby was traveling south at the time.

There are no charges in the accident, which Hills said was caused by a “little too much speed” on an unfamiliar curve. The speed limit there is 45 mph.
