Bangor city councilors OK new hires

BANGOR – City councilors authorized contracts Monday night for two people recently appointed to key municipal positions.

First up was Patti Dubois of Waterville, who will succeed retiring City Clerk Gail Campbell.

Before accepting the Bangor clerk position late last month, Dubois had served as Waterville’s clerk since 2001 and held other municipal posts in Waterville and Bath.

In Bangor, the city clerk is one of four direct employees of the council, along with the city manager, assessor and solicitor.

Dubois, selected from a field of 38 candidates, will receive beginning base pay of $58,968 a year, according to the one-year contract councilors approved.

Though Dubois resides in Waterville, the city will not require her to move to Bangor, though she will be required to live here if she moves from her current residence during her tenure as clerk.

The other new hire was Shawn Yardley, the city’s new director of public health and welfare.

A longtime Bangor resident, Yardley was chosen from among 14 applicants for the position, which had been vacant since the unexpected death on May 15 of Mary-Anne Chalila. Her career with the city spanned more than two decades.

Yardley’s most recent position was as director of the River Coalition in Old Town, a post he had held since 2001. Before that, he served as director of adoption for the Maine Adoption Placement Service and in a variety of positions with the state Department of Human Services, including regional program manager of the Bureau of Children and Family Services.

During their Monday meeting, councilors ratified City Manager Edward Barrett’s appointment of Yardley and authorized a one-year contract, setting Yardley’s annual base pay at $65,286.
