Fire up the grill

Barbecue enthusiasts will bring smoke and spice to Guilford next Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Piscataquis Heritage Festival. Last year’s Maine State Championship Barbecue Contest drew 13 teams from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The event, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. is a step to competing in the national finals. Tickets cost $2. For information, call Dennis Lyford at 564-7533.

Northern exposure

The Unviersity of Maine at Fort Kent will celebrate campus diversity – the campus is home to students from 22 countries – during a brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17. In addition to traditional breakfast fare, the menu will include Spanish rice, tabbouleh, Indian rice pudding, empanadas, curry chicken with rice, shortbread and baklava. The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $4 each and are available by calling 834-7513.
