Colby’s Lund a ‘hot’ coach

Bill Lund, an assistant football coach at Colby College in Waterville, has been named one of 10 “hot” coaches in NCAA Division III football by American Football Monthly magazine.

Lund, entering his fifth season with the Mules, was one of 10 coaches, and the only Division III coach, to attend the NCAA Expert Coaching Program this summer.

The Wisconsin native coaches linebackers and special teams at Colby. The Lawrence University grad was a four-year letterman and two-way performer there and also has coached at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire.

UMFK plans Alumni Weekend

The University of Maine-Fort Kent is inviting alumni and community members to campus this weekend as part of a four-game weekend soccer series involving the Bengals.

The UMFK women’s team opens the action at 1 p.m. Saturday against the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) at 1 p.m., while the men’s squad plays the same team at 3 p.m.

Former Bengal soccer players are invited to participate in Sunday’s alumni game at 10 a.m., before UMFK plays a doubleheader against Lyndon State (Vt.). The women’s game starts at noon, with the men to follow at 2 p.m.

Clenchy gains volleyball post

Scott Clenchy, a former player at Briercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan, Canada, has been named the new volleyball coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, athletic director Richard Ward announced recently.

Clenchy was also a four-year captain of the volleyball team at Herbert High in Saskatchewan.

The Owls open the season Friday when they host Thomas College at 6 p.m. The teams will play again Saturday afternoon.

U-New England adds swim team

The University of New England in Biddeford has added a women’s swimming and diving team to its varsity athletic offerings.

Kate Moholland, a 2000 graduate of Virginia Tech, will serve as the Nor’easters’ first head coach. She also will oversee the daily operations of UNE’s aquatics facility and swimming pool.
