Police arrest Levant man found with heroin

BANGOR – A Levant man is free on bail after being charged on Wednesday in 3rd District Court with trafficking in heroin.

William L. Beaulieu, 21, was arrested earlier this week at his residence, according to Greg Campbell, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County.

A probable cause hearing was scheduled for Oct. 27 in 3rd District Court in Newport. If Beaulieu is indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury before that date, the hearing will not be held.

Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency officers found 20 small bags of heroin in the passenger seat of Beaulieu’s vehicle and 111 small bags of heroin in the woods near his residence, Campbell said Friday.

Officers also found scales and empty bags similar to those that contained heroin in the residence, according to the prosecutor.

Beaulieu has appeared in court in Bangor on various charges at least four times over the past four years. He has been convicted of theft, possession of marijuana, assault and operating without a license. He has been ordered to pay fines in each case. It appears that Beaulieu had not been sentenced to jail time previously.

Bail was set on Wednesday at $1,000 cash and $10,000 surety. Beaulieu was released on $1,000 cash bail that same day, according to Penobscot County Jail officials.
