UMPI men get weekend split

PRESQUE ISLE – Sebastian Itman and Jay Johnson each scored twice to power the University of Maine-Presque Isle men’s soccer team to a 7-1 victory over the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) Saturday, while UMPI fell to Lyndon State 2-0 Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Andy Broomhall added a goal and an assist. Robert Allan and Ryan Lamoreau each contributed a goal. Jared Dyer had two assists and Mike Latchford made five saves on seven shots.

Matt Sullivan scored for the Saints and Tom Laplante made 10 saves on 15 shots.

In Sunday’s game, Isaac Fortin and Adam Bartman scored for the Hornets and Nick Roe stopped seven of eight shots. Braden Dragomir made four saves on six shots for UMPI.

UM-Fort Kent wins, ties

At Fort Kent, Alkehine Veloso’s goal in the 89th minute lifted the Bengals to a 2-1 win over Lyndon State on Sunday.

UMFK tied the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) 2-2 Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Anthony Lamarr gave the Bengals an early lead when he scored on a rebound. Lyndon State’s Robert Carey tied the game five minutes later. Nick Thibodeau made 10 saves on 18 shots for 2-2-1 UMFK while Jake Toof stopped seven of 16 shots for 2-3-1 Lyndon State.

In Saturday’s game, Matt Sullivan of St. Joseph scored to tie the game in the 78th minute but neither team scored again.

Donatas Sumyla scored twice for the Bengals and Thibodeau stopped nine of 17 shots. Tom Laplante made 16 saves on 31 shots for St Joseph.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 1

At Waterville Saturday, Simon Parsons and Thomas Bresnahan scored in the second half to lead the Polar Bears to the win.

Nathan Lovitz recorded two saves on five shots for 3-0 Bowdoin College of Brunswick.

Monty Hankin scored the 0-2 White Mules’ goal. Brian Davidson stopped nine of 16 shots.

St. Joseph’s 3, Maine Maritime 0

At Standish, Harrison Deah knocked in two goals, one off a Kyler Hengst pass, as the Monks blanked the Mariners Saturday.

Joe Valente added a goal for the winners. Kenny Kehoe had eight saves.

SMCC 6, NMCC 0

At South Portland Sunday, Miljan Simic and Bill Hilton each scored two goals as the Seawolves rolled.

Dominic Cook had a goal and two assists for the winners and Jason Souzer added a goal plus an assist. Jon Breard had four saves on four shots.

Adam Crew stopped 20 of 26 shots for Northern Maine Community College of Presque Isle.

EMCC 3, NMCC 2

At Bangor Saturday, Justin Allen netted two goals and Scott Sawyer had another as the Golden Eagles beat the Falcons.

Trevor Stevens made 10 saves on 15 shots for Eastern Maine Community College.

Ryan Welch and Chad Chaisson each scored for Northern Maine Community College. Adam Crew faced 25 shots, stopping 15.

Maine 3, Manhattan 2 (2OT)

At Newark, N.J., Sunday, Adam Chenault scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime to lift the Black Bears to victory.

Kevin Forgett and Justin Stockford scored one goal each and Cooper Friend posted two assists for 2-1-1 Maine. Chad Mongeon had three saves on 10 shots.

Justin Schultz scored for the 1-3 Jaspers on an own goal. Collin Leaver had 17 saves on 30 shots.

UM-Farmington 1, Thomas 0

At Prescott Field in Farmington on Sunday, Andy Knox scored the only goal of the game off an assist by Kellen Brown.

Seabren Reeves saw three shots, but didn’t have to make any saves for 2-2 UMaine-Farmington.

Ryan Conrad made four saves on 11 shots for the 1-2-1 Terriers of Waterville.

Women’s soccer

UM-Fort Kent splits games

At Fort Kent, Kristine Cyr scored twice as the Bengals rolled over Saint Joseph (Vt.) Saturday but Lyndon State shut down UMFK Sunday with a 1-0 win.

In Saturday’s game, Maria Williams added a goal and an assist for the Bengals, while Megan Goff, Marcie Cromwell and Amber Nadeau added goals. Angela Flanagin and Mackenzie Boucher each had two assists and Whitney Zettergren had one. Kara Jackson made seven saves on 17 shots and Leah Houghton had 14 saves on 24 shots for the 0-4 Saints.

In Sunday’s game, Darcy Leblanc scored for the 3-1-1 Hornets in the first half and Lindsay Maquire stopped five of 10 shots. Jackson had 14 saves on 21 shots for the 1-4 Bengals.

Maine 2, Marist 1

At Poughkeepsie, NY, Sunday, Marie-Andree Canuel and Erin Corey had unassisted goals in the Black Bear’s win.

Tanya Adorno saved five of seven shots for 5-2-1 Maine.

Deirdre Murray scored for Marist, while Danielle Cibelli saved five of ten shots.

St. Joseph’s 4, UM-Machias 1

At Standish Sunday, Morgan Meserve netted two goals as the Monks rallied for the win.

Danielle Somma and Shaina Howard each chipped in with a goal for 3-2 St. Joseph’s while Cheryl Northrup didn’t have to make any saves on the Clippers’ two shots.

Shelly Hayden scored off a pass from Cathy Wilson to give 2-3 UMM an early lead. Angela Qualey stopped seven of 15 shots.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 0

At Waterville Saturday, Katherine Whitley scored two goals off passes from Rachael Gordon and Melissa Anderson as the Polar Bears prevailed.

Anna Shapell had two sves on six shots for 2-1 Bowdoin.

Elizabeth Riley had 12 saves on 17 shots for 2-2 Colby.

W. Conn. 5, So. Maine 1

At Danbury, Conn. Sunday, Nicole Corbin and Katie Massicotte scored two goals apiece as Western Connecticut rolled.

Ashley Griffin made nine saves on 12 shots for the 6-2 Colonels.

Eva Hanson scored unassisted for the 2-2-2 Huskies of Gorham. Marcy Ansley and Holly Pelletier combined for three saves on 16 shots.

Bay Path 1, UM-Farmington 0

At Farmington, Devon Lauchmen scored with an assist from Tianna Carr to lift the Wildcats.

Denise Larochelle recorded a shutout for 6-0 Bay Path, while Melissa Demerchant and Alix Raymond split goal-keeping duties for the 1-3 Beavers.

Simpson 9, Thomas 1

At Waterville, Ashley Curran netted three goals and one assist as Simpson gained a win.

Morgan Kelly added two goals and two assists. Stephanie Shimp faced three shots but didn’t have to make any saves for 6-2 Simpson.

Karen Demers scored unassisted for the 0-5 Terriers. Jessie Craft and Danielle Searles combined for 15 saves on 44 shots.

Field hockey

Massachusetts 1, Maine 0

At Amherst, Mass., Sunday, junior Patrica Borneo scored an unassisted goal with 4:30 left in regulation the give the University of Massachusetts its first win of the season.

Christine Tocco made eight saves, facing 15 shots, for the 1-6 Minutewomen.

Jamie Morin saw seven shots, stopping one for the 6-3 Black Bears.

Maine 2, Harvard 0

At Cambridge, Mass., Saturday, Joanna Fernandes and Traci Rainone each had a goal as the Black Bears blanked the No. 16 Crimson.

Jamie Morin stopped all four shots she faced for 6-2 Maine. Alina Remtilla made two saves on 11 shots for 4-1 Harvard.

WNEC 3, UM-Farmington 2 (OT)

At Springfield, Mass., Sunday, Cori Eggert scored with 1:04 left to tie the game and tallied again in overtime to win it for Western New England College.

Mary Sinclair and Kristy Veazie each scored for UMaine-Farmington. Kristi Cochin and Kristin Allen had the assists, while Ashleigh Biette made six saves on 21 shots.

Colby 1, Bowdoin 0

At Waterville, Lauren Smith had the game’s only goal as the Mules held off the Polar Bears Saturday.

Molly Rice had six saves on 14 shots for 2-1 Colby while Kate Leonard stopped four out of 14 for 2-2 Bowdoin of Brunswick.

Thomas 5, Castleton St. 0

At Castleton, Vt., Saturday, Meredith Arute knocked in four goals and had an assist as the Terriers of Waterville rolled.

Molly Tibbetts added a goal for Thomas. Jen Lane had seven saves on 15 shots.

Emily Provencal stopped 11 of 24 shots for Castleton.

Becker 9, St. Joseph’s 2

At Leicester, Mass., Sunday, Elizabeth Hathaway led Becker to victory with two goals and three assists.

Katy Day made five saves for 2-2 Becker.

Sarah Kay and Katie Fortier both scored for 0-4 Saint Joseph’s of Standish, while Alisha Glass had an assist. In goal, Kelsey Moody made six saves, Ilissa Vallee made three and Mandy Gosselin made two.

Volleyball

Maine wins two

At West Point, N.Y., Shelly Seipp had 25 assists and nine digs as the UMaine volleyball team knocked off Army 30-26, 30-22, 30-24.

Maine defeated Dartmouth later Saturday, 30-19, 24-30, 30-19, 30-32, 16-14.

In the opener, Jody Connacher had 14 digs and Carmen Morgan nine for the 4-6 Bears. Kaili Jordan added 11 kills and Brittany Howe notched eight.

In the nightcap, Jordan tallied 26 kills while Howe and Leah Guidinger notched 10 apiece for UM.

Shannan Fotter added 12 kills while Connacher had 20 digs and Morgan 11.
