ELLSWORTH – Six of the eight residents to file candidacy papers for City Council elections this November are no strangers to local government.
One of them, in fact, is the former city manager whose contract with Ellsworth, after much controversy, was not renewed last year.
Former Ellsworth City Manager Tim King and former City Councilors Gary Fortier and John Phillips made the 5 p.m. filing deadline last Friday and will have their names appear as council candidates on the Nov. 2 ballot.
Incumbent Councilors Leon Beal, John Moore and Barbara Reeve also will have their names on the ballot, as will challengers Michael Beardsley and Matthew Strong.
Beal, Fortier, King, Phillips, Reeve and Strong are running for three-year terms on the council. Beardsley and Moore are running for one available one-year term.
Normally, there would be no more than three City Council terms ending at once, but the premature resignations of former Councilors Carrie Ciciotte last year and Leigh Guildford earlier this year have resulted in more than half the council’s seven seats coming up for re-election at the same time.
In other local elections, incumbent Ellsworth Public Library Trustee Raymond Williams is being challenged for one three-year term on the board by Rebecca Leamon. Kristin Petros and incumbent Richard Gray are the only candidates for two three-year terms on the school board.
