Machias tops WA Raiders

MACHIAS – James McCarthy scored three goals as Machias defeated Washington Academy of East Machias 5-1 Wednesday night in a midseason battle of schoolboy soccer unbeatens at the University of Maine at Machias.

Zac McNally added a pair of goals for the defending Class D state champion Bulldogs, who led 3-1 at intermission.

Miguel Lopes scored on a penalty kick in the first half for Washington Academy.

Marcus Frutchey made seven saves on 15 shots for 6-0 Machias. Jeremy Gray made 17 saves on 22 shots for 5-1 Washington Academy.

Shead 4, Narraguagus 2

At Eastport, four players scored one goal apiece as the Tigers won a game called with 12 minutes left because of an injury to a Shead player.

Junior Cody Bulmer, one of Shead’s goal scorers, suffered a broken leg in a collision with a Narraguagus player and was taken to a local hospital.

Mike Cummings, Aaron Sullivan and Perry Newell also scored for the 5-2 Tigers, who got two assists from Branden Cox. Craig Hastings made three saves on six shots.

Todd Pagels and Scott Baker tallied for 1-3 Narraguagus of Harrington. Aaron Duldin and Brandon Dugay posted assists while Josh Look made six saves on 16 shots.

Calais 3, Jonesport-Beals 1

At Jonesport, Jacob Ludington scored on a Shawn McKeen assist with 4:45 left in the first half to lead Calais to the win.

Devin McPhee and Jeff Francis each scored for 2-3 Calais. Doug Connelly made five saves on 13 shots.

Travis Weisberger scored with 20:51 left for 0-6 Jonesport-Beals. Ben Ellis stopped five of 10 shots.

Dexter 4, Deer Isle-Stonington 1

At Dexter, freshmen Rick Stewart and Ethan Woodman combined on three goals and two assists for the Tigers.

Stewart had two goals and one assist, while Woodman added a goal and an assist.

Junior Brandon Woodman added a goal off an assist by sophomore Aaron Woodman.

All of the Woodmans are brothers.

Nick Ciomei scored for Deer Isle-Stonington on an assist from Miles Douglass.

Sam Bowers made 14 saves on 16 shots for 2-4 Dexter. Rob Haskell made 15 saves on 35 shots for 2-3 Deer Isle-Stonington.

MCI 2, Mount View 0

At Pittsfield, Pedro Puigarnau scored on a Mark Trombley assist in the first half to lead host Maine Central Institute to victory.

Andrew DeBerthune added a second-half goal for 3-4 MCI. Tristan Goewey made two saves on eight shots.

Ross Caron stopped seven of 14 shots for 2-4-1 Mount View of Thorndike.

JV: MCI 3-0

Piscataquis 6, Searsport 2

At Searsport, Jeff Robinson scored two goals to lift Piscataquis of Guilford past Searsport.

Andy Zimmerman, Roy Burdin, Tobias Heine and Jarred Robinson each scored a goal for Piscataquis. Ryan Martell made seven saves on nine shots.

Josh Nickerson and Hiroki Dempo each scored for Searsport. Garrett Greenlaw made 22 saves on 28 shots.

Lee 5, Penquis 1

At Lee, Jake Kang scored two goals and Rick Kim chipped in with a goal and two assists as the Pandas prevailed.

Tom Bird and Doob Dow each added a goal for 6-1 Lee. Chris King and Cameron Hamilton combined to stop three of seven shots.

Nathan Allen scored for the 2-3 Patriots of Milo while Drew Hamlin stopped 22 of 30 shots.

Girls soccer

Ellsworth 2, GSA 0

At Blue Hill, Ashley Oleson scored a goal with 19:39 left in the first half to push Ellsworth to the victory.

Emily Miller scored on a direct kick from Anna Briggs 19:05 into the second half for 3-3-1 Ellsworth. Catie Cravens made four saves on 14 shots.

Kayla Eaton stopped five of nine shots for 2-3-1 George Stevens Academy.

JV: Ellsworth 2-0

Camden Hills 3, Oak Hill 0

At Rockport, Caitlin Brown, Lexi Coleman and Kayla Gushee scored one goal apiece as the Windjammers won.

Tana Scott provided two assists for 5-2 Camden Hills behind Beth Heron, who made two saves on as many shots.

Ashley Medeiros racked up 21 saves on 32 shots for 1-4-1 Oak Hill of Sabattus.

Presque Isle 7, MDI 0

At Mount Desert, Emily Robertson scored three goals and Natasha Deschene added two goals to lead the Presque Isle Wildcats to the a 7-0 schoolgirl soccer victory over Mount Desert Island on Wednesday.

Kylan Smith and Sarah Gonsiorki each scored one goal for the 9-0 Wildcats. Brianna Young saved four of seven shots.

Asia Ross saved 14 of 31 shots for the 0-3-3 Trojans.

Field hockey

Mattanawcook 3, Bangor 0

At Lincoln, Bethany Libby scored two goals to lead Mattanawcook Academy past Bangor.

Heather Gulesian had a goal and an assist for 4-3-1 Mattanawcook Academy. Shannon Pietras and Dyna Vose each had an assist. Melanie Markie and Sarah French combined to make two saves on five shots.

Sarah Hanselman stopped 10 of 16 shots for 2-5 Bangor.

JV: Mattanawcook 3-1
