BANGOR – An Old Town man was in serious condition Wednesday night at Eastern Maine Medical Center, one day after the car he was driving left Route 9 in Eddington and struck a tree.

David St. Louis, 45, was airlifted from the accident scene after firefighters used extricating equipment to remove him from the heavily damaged pickup truck he had been driving.

St. Louis suffered multiple broken bones, cuts and bruising, including a cut on his head, Jennings said. The injuries were initially substantial enough to prompt a call for the LifeFlight helicopter, although Jennings said Wednesday that he was told that they were not life threatening.

St. Louis apparently fell asleep at the wheel as he was heading east on Route 9 about 7 p.m., Jennings said.

The 2004 Ford F250 pickup truck St. Louis was driving crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane, left the road and drove across the lawn of the New Hope Hospice and struck a tree.

After hitting the tree, the truck’s rear end spun around and struck a fire hydrant.
