I read with interest the letter, “Rape really happens” (BDN, Sept. 11-12), written by Kathy W. Walker, executive director of Rape Response Services.
I would like to know what Walker has against Kobe Bryant or any man charged with the horrific crime of rape, to mount a vigorous defense against the charge? Bryant was indeed fortunate to have millions of dollars to hire lawyers, investigators, and have the DNA tests done. Then again, if he did not have his millions the charge would never have been brought and Bryant would be just another man who cheated on his wife.
Walker says the woman who brought the charge is a “victim of our society, a society that refuses to believe that rape happens.” It is more likely that she is a victim of her own greed. She saw a chance to make millions and she most likely will. The charge of rape can destroy a man even if proven false.
It would be good if Walker would read a newspaper once and a while. Innocent men are released from prison on a regular basis. Not only does rape happen, it is also true that on a regular basis some money-hungry woman makes false claims to benefit her financially.
I don’t think there can be much question in this matter that this is just what happened.
