BRUNSWICK – Senior captain Matt Bernal converted a pass from Kyle Vosmus with eight minutes remaining as Maine tipped Harvard 2-1 in men’s soccer action Tuesday.
Vosmus was playing in front of his hometown fans and he stole the ball from a Harvard defender to set up the game-winner as the Black Bears extended their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1).
Justin Stockford scored just 15 seconds into the game off a Kevin Forgett through ball to stake Maine to a 1-0 lead, but Anthony Tornaritis equalized off a Ben Mottau pass at the 61:45 mark.
Chad Mongeon made three saves on 10 shots for the 3-2-1 Bears, while Ryan Johnson had two saves on 11 shots for 4-4 Harvard, which had won four of its last five.
St. Joseph’s 5, Thomas 0
At Standish, Harrison Deah scored two goals to lead the Monks by the Terriers of Waterville.
Kyler Hengst, David Hakes, and Sean Fitzpatrick each added a goal for the 2-5-1 Monks, who led at the half 1-0. Brian White made six saves on eight shots.
Ryan Conrad made four saves on 18 shots for 2-3-1 Thomas.
Field hockey
Endicott 5, St. Joseph’s 0
At Standish, Kim Doody scored two goals to pace Endicott College to the win.
Jennifer Rheume and KD Balentine each had a goal and an assist for Endicott. Lindsay Fallon added a goal as Erin Curry stopped six of six shots.
Amanda Gosselin and Ilissa Vallee combined to make 11 saves on 17 shots.
Women’s soccer
Bowdoin 3, Bates 1
At Brunswick, Melissa Anderson scored on a Cedar Goldman assist at 32:08 to give Bowdoin the win over the previously unbeaten Bobcats.
Roberta Dennison and Ann Zeigler each scored for the 4-2 Polar Bears, and Anna Shapell made three saves.
Jessie Garguilo scored on a Sara Gips assist for 4-1 Bates of Lewiston. Emily Howieson stopped four shots.
