Police investigate fatal shooting of woman in her Brooks home

BROOKS – A woman was shot to death Wednesday night and state police investigators rushed to her home on Route 139, known as Purple Heart Highway, to investigate the shooting.

The shooting took place shortly after 8 p.m. in a single-story, wood-frame home situated about a quarter-mile from the village on the road to Thorndike.

State Trooper Mark Coleman confirmed that a woman was shot to death at the home and that a male had been isolated for questioning. A middle-aged man was observed sitting in a police vehicle parked in front of the home.

Coleman would not identify the victim or the man police were questioning. Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division also declined to discuss the details surrounding the shooting.

Angela Gottschalk, a next-door neighbor, said she heard a gunshot shortly after 8 p.m. but was not alarmed. It wasn’t until she noticed several police cars drive into her neighbor’s yard that she realized something was wrong.

“I was sitting looking for a van on e-Bay and all of a sudden a lot of cops came up,” she said. “That’s when I remembered the gunshot.”

Gottschalk said she moved to town three weeks ago and did not know her neighbors. She said she would wave when she observed family members out on their porch and they would wave, but never had any contact with the family.

Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story and his deputies secured the scene and assisted state police with their investigation.
