‘Flocking’ all in good fun for Calais student

CALAIS – Morgan Sherrard was flocked Thursday.

The Calais School Committee candidate, who is seeking her first term, found a flock of flamingos near her business at the Sherrard Insurance Agency on North Street.

The plastic birds were meant as good fun from a friend who was helping to raise money for a Calais youngster who is going to be part of a cheerleading squad at the Orange Bowl in Florida on Jan. 4.

Alaina Crowley has to raise $2,000.

The flocking was the brainchild of Heather Henry of Alexander. Henry, the school health coordinator for Union 106, came up with the idea of leaving pink birds on people’s lawns.

More than 450 students from across the state, New Hampshire and the Maritime Provinces in July attended the National Cheerleading Association camp at Husson College in Bangor. Of the 450, 38 walked away with the All-American Title.

The four students who passed the National Cheerleading Association test were Crowley, Ashleigh Preston, Danielle Bailey and Alex Henry.

Heather Henry said she had heard about the “Flocked by Flamingo” fund-raiser and went online, purchasing two groups of birds.

“So if you called and said you wanted to have somebody’s lawn hit by these flamingos, the person whose lawn is hit has to pay to have them removed, so we have a removal service in place,” Henry said. “So you have to make a donation to get them removed, but you also have the right to say whose lawn they go on next.”

Henry said people have viewed the flocking as a lot of fun. “An average donation is $20 to $25,” she said.

Anyone who would like to flock a friend should call Alaina Crowley at 454-8174.
