Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Roland “Danny” Martin will be on hand at the Maine Snowmobile Show in Augusta Saturday, where he will unveil the new “Ride Right-Ride Smart” interactive CD produced by the department.

Visitors to the show will have the chance to view the CD on one of 10 computers set up at the show.

The goal of the CD is to make it as easy as possible for everyone to learn snowmobile safety, whether you are heading out on the trail for the first time or are an experienced rider.

The interactive CD is the latest joint educational effort between the DIF&W and the Maine Snowmobile Association. A two-hour Ride Right instructional course debuted last year.

The CD will be available at no charge from the DIF&W or the Maine Snowmobile Association at events throughout the winter. To order it by mail, send $5 to the MSA at P.O. Box 80, Augusta, 04332.

The Maine Snowmobile Show opened on Friday at the Augusta Civic Center and will run through Sunday.

Ceremony of hope scheduled

A “Ceremony of Hope” will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the site of the former Maine Conservation School at Greenland Point.

Passamaquoddy elders will meet youth drummers on the shore of Long Lake, and a smudge ceremony will be held.

The Greenland Point facility has been used traditionally as a youth-education center focusing on conservation issues, but is for sale. The ceremony highlights the hope that Greenland Point will continue to be used for conservation purposes.

A representative from Gov. John Baldacci’s office will join speakers talking about Greenland Point.

Blue Hill club plans shoot

The Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club will hold its annual fall shoot on Sunday, Oct. 17. The theme for the event is “The Return for Running Deer.”

The all-day event begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

Scheduled events include a cowboy action demonstration, standard trap shooting, wobble trap, standing deer, running deer, 410 turkey shoot for kids, archery and indoor shooting.

Prizes or trophies will be awarded in all shooting events.

A raffle at the end of the day will result in one lucky shooter winning a $400 Nikon range-finder.

The Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club is located on Range Road off Route 15 in Blue Hill.

Trapper education course on tap

The Pleasant River Fish and Game Conservation Association will conduct a trapper education course on Oct. 109 at the clubhouse in Columbia.

The course will run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and is the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife requirement for anyone wanting to obtain a Maine trapper license.

The course will cover fur-bearing animals and their habitat, methods of trapping, equipment needed, and state trapping laws.
