ORONO – Freshman striker Laura Harper scored her first collegiate goal to give the University of Maine a 1-0 women’s soccer victory Friday over Maryland Baltimore County in a mutual America East opener.
Harper split a pair of defenders and headed home an Erin Corey cross 10:55 into the game.
Tanya Adorno saved one of two shots for the 7-2-1 Black Bears.
Robin Babaris made six saves on 16 shots for 4-5 UMBC.
Men’s soccer
Unity 6, EMCC 3
At Bangor, Matt Belonick and Ben Skelly each scored two goals to lead Unity College to the win.
Peter Taliaferro had a goal and an assist for 5-3 Unity, and John Korkos added a goal. Tyler Ferguson made five saves on eight shots.
Scott Sawyer scored one goal and assisted on another for Eastern Maine Community College. Justin Allen and Ryan Ouelette also scored a goal. Trevor Stevens stopped 12 of 18 shots for the 2-5 Eagles.

UNE 5, St. Joseph’s 0
At Biddeford, Ruth Ness scored two goals to help lead the University of New England.
Amy Williams, Maura Gardner, and Sarah Meyer each added a goal for the 6-1 Nor’easters. Lisa Baillargeon had two assists, and Krystal Wysocki made three saves.
Kelsey Moody made 10 saves for 0-9 Saint Joseph’s College of Standish.
