Leighton gets 4 goals in win Dragons shut out Vikings

DANFORTH – Ben Leighton notched four goals and an assist as Woodland shut out East Grand 5-0 in boys soccer action Friday.

Cody Sappier added a goal for the 3-5 Dragons. Marshall Crowe made two assists and Steve Newell one. Todd Townstead stopped all eight shots he faced.

Zach Faulkner and Mike Hanington combined to make 15 saves on 20 shots for the 1-5 Vikings.

Washington Acad. 6, J-Beals 2

At East Machias, Drake Simmons led the Raiders with two goals and an assist.

Minh Nguyen, Trevor Jessiman, Young-Soo Kim, and Eddie Sprague each contributed a goal for 9-1 WA. Sam Hostetter had an assist, and Jeremy Gray saved 13 of 15 shots.

James Kelly made two unassisted goals for the 1-7 Jonesport-Beals Royals. Ross Griffin made 19 saves on 30 shots.

Greenville 4, Vinalhaven 0

At Greenville, Jonah Lizotte knocked in two goals and made one assist as the Lakers took a victory over the Vikings.

Corey Woodbury and Kevin Lebel had a goal apiece. Durgan McKusick made two assists, and Eric Driscoll had one. Brandon Lavigne saved three of four shots for 8-1 Greenville.

Dusty Hufsey made 11 saves on 29 shots for 2-5 Vinalhaven.

Hampden 6, Brewer 0

At Hampden, Martin Earley scored three goals to lead Hampden Academy to the win.

Josh McNutt had a goal and an assist for the 9-0 Broncos. Jay Uhrin and Keith Zanardi each added a goal, and Andre Cushing and Nattapong Kongsuriya both had an assist. Max Silver stopped all three shots.

Ben Davis made 11 saves on 21 shots for 3-7 Brewer.

JV: Hampden 9-1

Calvary Chapel 12, Averill 2

At Bangor, Rosaire Veilleux and Andrew Lowe each scored three goals to push Calvary Chapel Christian of Orrington to the win.

Jacob Thomas had a goal and two assists for 2-1 Calvary Chapel. Jeremy Brooker, Andrew Pennisi, Brandon Dean, John Burke, and Chris Phillips all had one goal and Brandon Scovil had two assists. Caleb Carmichael stopped three of four shots.

Aston Roy and Shawn Staples both scored a goal for 1-8 Averill of Hinckley. Roy and Joe Hart combined to made 16 saevs on 27 shots.

Girls soccer

Woodland 1, Narraguagus 0

At Woodland, Tabitha Hagenaars scored off a corner kick from Heidi Graceffa in the first half to give the Dragons the only goal of the game.

Cynthia Bergin made six saves on eight shots for Woodland. Alicia Tenney faced 18 shots and stopped 17 for the Knights.

Brewer 1, Hampden 0

At Brewer, Kelly Shultz netted the only goal at 8:03 into the second half for the Witches.

Carolyn Tuck stopped all 20 shots to come her way for 2-5-1 Brewer.

Michelle Wells faced 10 shots and saved five for the 6-2 Broncos.

Lee 8, Bangor Christian 2

At Bangor, Shelby Pickering led the Pandas with four goals as they swept past the Patriots.

Jodi Worcester, Aarika Richie, Erica Hanson, and Liz Read each added a single goal for 9-0 Lee. Amanda Gifford and Marci Moors made assists, while Pickering, Worcester, and Brooke Harris combined to make five saves on eight shots.

Amber Leathers scored both goals for 4-4-2 Bangor Christian. Johanna Kutz saved 17 of 25 shots.

Field hockey

John Bapst 2, Hermon 1

At Hermon, Marci Scofield tied the game at 1-1 with a penalty stroke in the second half and followed it with the winning shot for the Crusaders with 19:21 to play.

Meredith Atkinson made eight saves on nine shots for John Bapst of Bangor.

Jessica Deprey scored with an Emily Bell assist for the Hawks. Meagan McCready faced 19 shots and saved 17.

JV: Hermon 2-0

Dexter 3, Bangor 0

At Dexter, Meagan Fogarty accumulated three goals for the winning Tigers.

Fogarty’s first goal came on a penalty stroke with 27:11 remaining in the second half. Ashley Wakefield also assisted on one goal, while Cristy McGowen made two saves on 16 shots for 7-2-1 Dexter.

Sarah Hanselman faced 24 shots and stopped two for the 2-8 Rams.

JV: Dexter 4-1
