Bangor native Matt Kinney was given his outright release from the Kansas City Royals’ organization Sunday night and is now free to become a free agent pitcher this offseason.
The 1995 sixth round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox is now free to sign with any team following his fourth big league season.
The 27-year-old right-hander went 3-5 with a 6.06 ERA this season with both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Royals, who claimed him off waivers in August. He allowed 204 hits and 30 walks in 78 2/3 innings while striking out 73 batters. In his four seasons, Kinney is 17-27 with a 5.27 ERA with three different teams.
