15 Maine grads earn journalism scholarships

ELLSWORTH – The Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship Fund, established by the trustees of the Gannett Foundation through the Maine Community Foundation in 2000, has awarded scholarships to 15 students, all graduates of Maine high schools.

The recipients will receive financial support for graduate and undergraduate studies at schools across the country, including Columbia University, Bowdoin College, Maine College of Art, University of Maine and Northwestern University. The awards this year total $160,000.

The new 2004 Gannett Scholars are Julia Hall of Peru and Josh Keefe of Veazie, both former interns with the Bangor Daily News.

Thirteen students had their scholarships renewed: Carolyn Bancroft, Portland; Emily Carle, Long Island; Samantha DePoy, Farmington; Libby Frances, Hollis; Katie Fuller, Dixfield; Robert Guerette, Auburn; Kristen Hopkins, Orland; Elizabeth Jarrell, Belfast; Daniel Louten, Portland; Heather Manning, Camden; Matthew Olson, Belfast; Kyle Robinson, Gouldsboro; and Karolina Turell, Limington.

A volunteer review committee selected the students based on demonstrated interest in journalism, excellence in academic performance and financial need. The fund helps pay to attend an undergraduate, graduate, trade or technical school.
