The University of Southern Maine always features several student-athletes who are products of Maine high schools.
This fall, the Huskies are benefiting from the talents of two former Calais High standouts, as juniors James Frost and Katie Welch are making an impact in their respective sports.
Frost has been the leader for the Huskies golf squad, which continues to battle Husson College of Bangor and Saint Joseph’s College of Standish for supremacy among the state’s small-college golf programs.
Last weekend, Frost shot a 3-over 143 and earned medalist honors at the USM Fall Classic at Sable Oaks Golf Course in South Portland. He helped the Huskies win for the third time in seven matches this season.
Frost, who also was the top individual performer at the University of New England Invitational, is averaging only 1.7 strokes over par in seven rounds and is by far USM’s best player.
His best round of the season was a 3-under 69 in the Maine State Tournament Sept. 24 at Riverside GC in Portland.
Welch is coming off Little East Conference Player of the Week honors for the USM women’s tennis team.
Welch, the Huskies’ No. 1 singles player and a team captain, went 3-0 in matches last week and also teamed up with No. 1 doubles partner Catie McCarthy to post a 2-1 record.
Welch pushed her season marks to 7-3 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles. She has been involved in 13 of her team’s 29 wins in 2004.
USM has struggled overall, going 2-8 overall and 2-4 in LEC action. The Huskies will host the conference championships October 15-16 at the Deering Oaks courts in Portland.
Former UMaine QB at Westfield
Jon Meczywor is one of only two quarterbacks in the history of the University of Maine football program to have led the Black Bears to an NCAA playoff victory.
In spite of that distinction, he wasn’t content with his backup status at UMaine and transferred after the 2003 season.
This fall, the senior from Lanesboro, Mass., has returned to his home state where he’s competing for Division III Westfield State College.
Meczywor leads the New England Football Conference with 197 passing yards per game, having completed 62 of 130 passes (.477) for 787 yards and four touchdowns with four interceptions.
Westfield State ranks third in total offense with 317 yards per contest.
With Jake Eaton sidelined by a knee injury, Meczywor was UMaine’s quarterback in a 14-13 NCAA first-round victory at Appalachian State in 2002.
Colby’s Tortorella to be honored
Colby College ice hockey coach Jim Tortorella will be inducted into the Concord-Carlisle (Mass.) High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday in Concord, Mass.
Tortorella is Colby’s all-time leader in wins, having coached the White Mules of Waterville to a 142-68-18 record in nine years. Tortorella was a standout goalie for the University of Maine hockey team.
He began his coaching career at Brunswick High where he coached from 1984 to 1987. Tortorella moved on to Cony High in Augusta from 1988 to 1993. He twice was named Maine Coach of the Year.
Tortorella served as an assistant coach for the University of New Hampshire for two years before joining the coaching staff at Colby.
