Group gets permit to sell magazines in Brewer

A door-to-door magazine sales group mentioned in Tuesday’s From Police Files column has obtained the required sales permit from the city of Brewer.

The city clerk issued the permit Wednesday to Pacific Coast Clearing Services of Gig Harbor, Wash., doing business as LSI, according to Brewer police Sgt. Jason Moffitt. The group began knocking on doors several days ago before Wednesday’s authorization to do business in the city, he said.

Residents are no longer asked to alert the Police Department about visits from PCCS employees.

An Exeter man was summoned for operating under the influence Tuesday after he was nearly run over by his own car.

Bangor police stopped Joseph E. Emery, 58, at 11:30 p.m. on Broadway for driving without his headlights on, according to reports. Emery then got out of his Ford Explorer without shifting into park and had to grab the driver’s side door to avoid being run over.

The car rolled backward more than 30 feet as Emery’s legs straddled the left front wheel, finally stopping when the car hit a large metal trash bin. When police reached him, Emery smelled of alcohol and his eyes were red and watery, according to reports.

Emery told police he had consumed three beers in about three hours while playing cards at a local pool hall and said he was “a little buzzed,” according to reports. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and later registered a 0.04 blood alcohol content. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Emery was summoned for operating under the influence and released.

A cell phone was apparently the cause of a Wednesday accident in which a Dedham woman suffered minor injuries.

Ingrid Rutan, 22, was trying to pick up her ringing cell phone when at 12 a.m. her 1998 Dodge Durango left Wilson Street in Brewer and hit a telephone pole near Doc’s Place. The pole, which is not connected to any wiring, cracked and was pushed about six inches, according to police.

Rutan was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for pain, but she did not appear seriously injured, police said. Her vehicle had $5,000 in damage.
