Man involved in shooting returns to jail

BANGOR – A Pleasant Point man involved in a 1997 shooting that left a Clifton storeowner permanently disabled had his probation revoked Wednesday in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Tolbert Choneska, 26, was ordered to return to jail for another three years after a hearing before Justice Thomas Delahanty.

Immediately after the hearing, Choneska was taken into the custody by the Department of Corrections, according to Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Michael Roberts. The defendant was taken to the Maine Correctional Facility in Windham.

The probation revocation was the result of allegations that Choneska last month consumed alcohol for the second time since his release in June from incarceration for a previous alcohol-related probation violation.

Choneska was ordered to avoid alcohol in the spring of 2003 because of alcohol-related problems that arose during his probation. In September of last year, he received a one-year jail sentence because of ongoing issues related to problem drinking.

He also allegedly consumed alcohol on Aug. 1 of this year but was released on bail.

Though not the shooter, Choneska was one of three young men involved in the shooting incident, along with his cousin Travis Murphy and his younger brother Cote Choneska.

Tolbert Choneska and Murphy both pleaded guilty to robbery in 1998 and were sentenced to five-year prison sentences. Both were released from prison three years ago.

Cote Choneska pleaded guilty to firing six bullets into Jim Hodgins, 63, who owned and operated a small convenience store on Route 9. Cote Choneska was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was convicted of attempted murder and robbery.
