Bangor: celebrating 150 years

Grace United Methodist Church has been at the corner of Union and Clinton streets since 1854, so the congregation is marking its anniversary with a special service Sunday. Methodists had been in the city for about 40 years when the cornerstone was laid. Until stone facing was added in 1948, the church had primarily a wood exterior (photo, circa 1930s). The church is proud of its connections to its neighborhood, providing a thrift shop, meals for a homeless shelter and food for an ecumenical cupboard. In addition to special music and recognition of former pastors, the 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, worship service will feature speaker Marcelle Dotson, district superintendent of the Northern Maine District of the New England Methodist Conference.
