Crystal, 13, enjoys time with siblings

Crystal is an affectionate and sweet 13-year-old with light brown hair, glasses and a beautiful smile. She visited Great Skates in Bangor in early September to film a series of “Thursday’s Child” television segments with her sister Tammy, 9, and brother Gene, 7.

The trip was an enjoyable one for Crystal and her siblings because the trio had the entire entertainment center to themselves on an otherwise dreary, rainy day caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Frances.

During her interview with WABI 5 news anchor Sharon Pelletier, Crystal acknowledged that the filming would mark her first appearance on television.

The teenager also provided Pelletier with a glimpse of her eclectic tastes in music and movies, saying she liked “Britney Spears music,” the PBS animated television show “Arthur” and the Disney movie “Pocahontas.” She added that she favors the latter because it’s both “a bit funny and a bit sad.”

Crystal said she would like to be a doctor when she grows up because she likes to help people. This “helping” nature is especially true on the school bus, she said, as she often has to take care of her siblings and keep them from arguing on the drive to and from school.

Crystal is a happy and respectful child who wants to please adults. She enjoys crafts and spending time playing with her dollhouse. She responds well to choices and redirection, loves to laugh and enjoys spending time with her siblings.

Crystal and her siblings came into the care of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services in February 2003.

Crystal is in the sixth grade and receives special education services because of her delays in all academic areas. She has many friends and is very social at school. Her teachers report that she is doing well in school and has made significant progress.

Crystal said her favorite subject is “math … because it’s fun.” She also noted that she enjoys playing volleyball and soccer with her friends at school.

Crystal and her siblings would like to be adopted together. An adoptive family for the children will need to be a two-parent family with parenting experience. Crystal and her siblings need continuous supervision and a structured home environment.

Crystal is one of 221 Maine children in DHHS care seeking an adoptive home. For more information about Crystal or other children available for adoption, contact A Family for ME at 1-877-505-0545 or visit www.afamilyforme.org.

Based in Gardiner, A Family for ME is a nonprofit program that works in collaboration with Maine DHHS to find foster and adoptive families for Maine children in care.
