BANGOR – Freshman tailback Mike Prentiss rushed for 274 yards on 33 carries and scored all four touchdowns while leading the Eagles to the first football victory for the modern era Husson College program Saturday: a 28-14 triumph over fellow second-year program Southern Virginia University.
“It’s awesome. We know it’s going to go down in the history of Husson football,” said Prentiss. “We’ve worked so hard to get that first win and finally coming together to get it was great. The defense stepped up to stop their running attack and our defensive backfield did a great job on their receivers.”
Prentiss ran for 171 yards and three of this touchdowns in the third quarter alone.
Husson’s offensive line of center David Brown, tackles Louis Avent and A.J. Buzzell, and guards Michael Closson and Jason Cross opened up some big holes for the freshman back.
“They were incredible. They made it fairly easy for me,” said the former Bangor High School football star, who averaged 8.3 yards per carry. “We were able to run to the outside pretty well.”
Passing-wise, Husson enjoyed some success as David Chase of Sabattus completed 6-of-17 attempts to four different receivers for a total of 100 yards. The key statistic of the Eagles was third-down conversions. Husson converted on six of 15 while the Knights only hit on one of 15. Both teams were 2-for-5 on fourth-down conversions.
Husson is now 1-5 on the season while the Knights fall to 0-5.
This is the first win for Husson in its second season of varsity football since the program existed under a different school name in the 1940’s.
The Eagles were led defensively by Skowhegan’s Josh Nowlin, who notched 10 total tackles. Hollis native Pat McDonough had 51/2 tackles and two of Husson’s five sacks.
Van Buren’s Tyler Hughes made all four PAT kicks he attempted for the Eagles.
The Knights took a 7-0 lead into halftime, but Husson responded with an offensive explosion in the third quarter and held Southern Virginia to 26 total yards in the quarter.
The Eagles will have a week off before taking on winless Plymouth State University (0-6) at Plymouth, N.H., on Oct. 23.
Timothy Crawley gained 155 yards on 27 carries to lead the Knights offense. Southern Virginia gained 205 of its 324 total yards on the ground.
