QB Smith leads Colby to 2nd win Bowdoin snaps 14-game losing streak

WATERVILLE – Quarterback Justin Smith threw for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday as Colby defeated Wesleyan 23-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game.

Colby’s defense held the visiting Cardinals to 211 total yards with six interceptions and six sacks.

Colby co-captain Steve Kasperski led the defense from his middle linebacker position with nine tackles, two interceptions, and three pass break-ups. Josh Berman also had two interceptions.

Colby (2-1) jumped into the lead for good when Smith, who completed 17 passes, hooked up with Chris Duncombe on an 11-yard scoring play in the first quarter.

John Goss added two of his three field goals from 30 and 37 yards in the second quarter to give the Mules a 13-0 lead at the half.

Smith put Colby up 20-0 when he connected with Jon Vacca on an 8-yard scoring play in the third quarter. Goss booted a 45-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for the final points of the game.

Wesleyan running back Phil Banks had 91 yards on 19 rushes, while quarterback Zach Canter completed 13 passes for 116 yards.

Williams 41, Bates 14

At Lewiston, Sean Gleeson threw two touchdown passes Saturday to lead Williams to a 41-14 New England Small College Athletic Conference victory over Bates.

Tim Crawley rushed for 155 yards and scored a touchdown for Williams, which improved to 2-1. Bates fell to 0-3.

Down 20-0 early in the second quarter, Bates got on the board when Brandon Colon found Ron DiGravio for a 19-yard scoring pass.

But Crawley’s third-quarter score from one yard out on fourth and goal restored Williams’ big lead.

Bowdoin 14, Tufts 12

At Brunswick, quarterback Ricky Leclerc’s 14-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter led Bowdoin a 14-12 win over Tufts, allowing the Polar Bears to break a 14-game losing streak.

Tufts, with Kevin Holland catching 22 passes for 202 yards, dominated nearly every facet of the game, racking up 604 yards of total offense and collecting 33 first downs to Bowdoin’s nine.

But a botched two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter prevented Tufts (1-2) from pulling even and a fumble recovery by Bowdoin’s Zach Hammond with 10 seconds remaining to play clinched the win.

With the victory, Bowdoin improved its record to 1-2.

Bridgewater State 35, MMA 14

At Castine, junior quarterback Adam Camobreco passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 32 yards and one score in leading the Bridgewater State College Bears past Maine Maritime Academy.

Running back Brendan Kavey ran for two touchdowns and gained 101 yards on 27 carries for the 3-2 Bears.

Patrick Bard of Winslow completed 13 of 28 passes for 182 yards and one interception. He also had 25 carries for 27 yards and two touchdowns.

Nate Bolduc led MMA with six tackles and Chris Clayton had five.
