ELLSWORTH – A Franklin man who fell into a coma after he was beaten last month outside a North Street home has died as a result of his injuries.

Daniel Evans Wallace, 50, died Saturday at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Wallace was hospitalized Sept. 20 for injuries he suffered in a beating, allegedly by his daughter’s boyfriend, Jack D. Wentworth, 18, of Township 8.

The assault occurred after Wallace’s daughter and Wentworth had argued about a cell phone. Wallace intervened in an attempt to calm Wentworth down, according to Ellsworth police.

Wentworth is accused of fracturing the older man’s skull and causing a brain injury when he knocked Wallace to the ground and kicked him in the head.

Wallace initially was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth but later was transferred to EMMC.

Maine State Police had been working on the case with Ellsworth police, according to McCausland, and with Wallace’s death will remain involved.

After the incident, Wentworth was arrested at his home on Route 179 and taken to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth.

Hours after his release on bail, authorities say, Wentworth was assaulted outside his home, allegedly by Travis Battis, 23, of Hancock. Police believe the assault was in retaliation for the attack on Wallace.

Battis was charged with assault. Wentworth was treated for his injuries at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and released.
