ORONO – There is a new way to play hockey at Maine, “Maine Hockey the Card Game” was recently released for sale, with proceeds to benefit the University of Maine hockey program.
Dr. Sandy Caron, Professor of Family Relationships at the University of Maine, approached Maine men’s ice hockey coach Tim Whitehead with the concept for the game. This summer they sat down together and developed the rules. The game is played by two people and involves passing and scoring by matching cards, and of course, there are penalty cards. Each run through the deck constitutes one period, with the game lasting three periods. The cards are round and black with the Maine hockey logo so the deck looks like a hockey puck.
The game is on sale at Bear Necessities, the University of Maine Bookstore, Gunn’s Sport Shop in Brewer, and Carey’s Market in Stillwater. The cost of the game is $9.95. The game can also be purchased online at www.goblackbears.com.
