Practice pays off for PCHS Levesque scores goal in OT off Martel assist

GUILFORD – One day after practicing overtime situations, the Piscataquis field hockey team put the lessons to good use – and in the nick of time.

Kristi Levesque and Kellie Martel hooked up with three seconds left in the eight-minute extra period to lift the Pirates to a 2-1 win over Nokomis Tuesday afternoon at the high school field.

It was the final regular-season game for both teams. Piscataquis (12-2) will wait to find out its matchup for the Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinals. The Pirates were No. 1 in Tuesday’s Heal Point standings.

The Class B Warriors, who were third in the standings, dropped to 9-4-1.

Piscataquis coach Trisha Moulton said she had put the Pirates through seven-on-seven drills in Monday’s practice. In field hockey overtimes, each team is allowed seven players, including a goalie.

“[In practice] they really had to move the ball upfield using quick passes and that’s what they did in the overtime,” Moulton said.

The winning goal originated as a penalty corner. Martel got the ball at the 16-yard line and passed straight down to Levesque, who poked it past Nokomis goalie Kirsten Gould from the 8-yard line.

“I just shot it.” Martel said. “[Levesque is] usually there to get [the passes].”

It seemed appropriate that Levesque and Martel were responsible for the game-winner. Levesque now has a team-high eight goals while Martel has been leading the squad in assists.

The two girls said they could hear the time being counted down on the sidelines and knew they had just a few seconds to make a play.

“I heard, five, four, and I hit it,” Levesque said. “We’ve done that before this year. In one game we had no seconds on the clock but we had to finish out a corner and [sisters Kellie and Kelsey Martel] scored.”

Piscataquis had eight penalty corners in the second half but wasn’t able to score on any of those.

“Normally when we’re in the circle, we’re thinking about scoring and we’re really intense,” Levesque said. “But today we were just hoping.”

Play was back and forth in the first half even though the Pirates took an early lead when Heather Tracy scored about nine minutes into the first half.

Kellye Jordan tied the game for Nokomis on a penalty stroke 53 seconds before halftime.

Warrior senior Michelle Barden had several breakaways, including a run through the midfield with about 16 minutes left in regulation. She took the ball inside the circle but dished it off to Sarah Bradstreet, who couldn’t get to the pass in time.

“Second half, we kind of let up a little,” Nokomis coach Katie Thompson said. “We needed to get the ball on our sticks more and get the ball to Michelle more.”

PCHS goalie Amy Knowlton had seven saves on 10 shots, while Gould stopped six of eight shots.

JV: Piscataquis 3-0
