Uptown, downtown, even at the mall, delightful mirrors will whet your appetite for the next major fund-raiser for Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor.

It has been a labor of love for my friend Susan Carlisle to seek out, write and convince some of Maine’s finest artists, and those with connections to Maine, to paint and decorate wall mirrors for children.

Their unusual and beautiful contributions will be up for bid in “Lookin Good,” the museum’s second annual gala dinner auction at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Norumbega Hall in downtown Bangor.

Admission to the event, which I can promise will be as wonderful as its predecessor (when many of us successfully bid on painted and decorated children’s rocking chairs) is $40 per person.

Right now, in downtown store windows and the Weathervane in the Bangor Mall, you will view something that should please everyone, from mirrors with elegant gold leaf to landscapes, sea-scapes and even a more-than-child-size clown mirror with movable arms and legs.

Cathy Hamburger is asking for assistance with the reception after the funeral service for Barbara Gray of Orland, a popular, active member of the Greater Bucksport community who died of cancer on Sunday, Oct. 10.

The service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Elm Street Congregational Church in Bucksport, and will be followed by a gathering for family and friends at the Verona Island Town Hall.

Hamburger asks anyone willing to provide a casserole, dessert or finger rolls to drop off their donations at the Town Hall between 9 and 9:30 a.m. the day of the service.

You are also requested to call Hamburger at the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to let her know what you will be bringing. That number is 469-6818.

Employees of General Nutrition Centers can wear jeans and a pink ribbon to work on Friday, Oct. 15, for “Denim Day.”

Participating employees will donate $5 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and any customer visiting GNC stores that day, which is National Mammogram Day, will receive a 10 percent discount off their purchase of a regularly priced product.

Pat Cammack called to remind readers that it is time once again for the Penobscot Valley Ski Club’s annual ski and snowboard equipment sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Bangor Armory on Main Street.

Admission is free for the event, which is the club’s major fund-raiser.

You can register to sell your used ski equipment for $1 per item, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the armory.

Bangor High School Music Booster Jackie Frisk invites the public to the Boosters’ rain or shine October yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at 26 Balsam Drive in Bangor.

Frisk reports that proceeds from this fund-raiser will help support BHS music programs and activities.

Now through Friday, Dec. 31, U.S. Cellular, through its Community Action Recycling Effort program, is accepting donations of old, wireless phones at any of its local stores or agents.

U.S. Cellular will collect those phones and sell them to RMS Communications, which restores and refurbishes them.

U.S. Cellular accepts any wireless phone except bag phones and vehicle-installed models.

Batteries and chargers will also be recycled.

Proceeds from the donated phones benefit the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence.

In thanking U.S. Cellular for its commitment to help end domestic violence, Kim Roberts, executive director of MCEDV, reports the funds will be used to support the organization’s statewide legislative outreach efforts.
