It is inconceivable why anyone would vote to approve spot zoning in order to allow someone to substantially increase the value of his or her properties. Apparently that is what Dana Keene in Belfast is trying to do for his relative Dana Skinner.
I was asked, several months ago, if I would sign a petition to bring Shaw’s supermarket to Belfast. When I asked if this was to allow for commercial development up to 200,000 square feet, the individual admitted it was. I wonder how many signed this petition thinking we might get a Shaw’s to compete with Hannaford. The intention is to allow for a Wal-Mart Supercenter, The Home Depot or both.
These individuals have found a method to bypass all the agencies in place to protect us: the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Planning Board and the City Council as well as the city planner. Hopefully residents of Belfast will see through this sham and vote no on Nov. 2.
