ORONO – Bangor native Joe Campbell, former South Portland star Chris Markwood, and Lithuanian guard Freddy Petkus have been chosen as captains of the University of Maine men’s basketball team.

All three players are seniors who logged plenty of playing time last season. Campbell has played in 80 games, starting 51; Markwood started 23 games last season; and Petkus saw action in all 30 games for the Black Bears.

Maine head coach Ted Woodward also announced the hiring of assistant coach Douglas Leichner and the retention of assistant Mike Burden, who was hired this summer by former head coach John Giannini. Leichner has been a high school head coach the last seven seasons in Florida while Burden was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida International University last year.
