Bangor police arrested two people Tuesday after they tried to sell silver coins reported stolen from a Brewer antiques mall.
Frederick Whitney, 35, and Sondra Bjornson, 33, both of Bangor were each charged with theft and receiving stolen property after police found they had items on them that had been stolen from the Center Mall on Center Street in Brewer.
Whitney and Bjornson tried to sell the coins to Maritime International, a business on Central Street in Bangor that specializes in coins and jewelry. But employees there had been told to be on the lookout for the coins and were given a description of the suspected pilferers by someone at the Center Mall in Brewer.
Bangor police officers detained and then arrested the two not far from the store and stolen coins were recovered, said Brewer police Sgt. Jason Moffitt. Three others apparently associated with the two in custody were interviewed but no charges were filed.
Brewer police were alerted to the theft at 2:53 p.m. and were told that five suspicious people had entered the store and that it was discovered later that a display case had been broken into. Several coins, a pair of miniature cannons were taken and possibly other items, according to police.
Within about 15 minutes of the items being reported stolen, Moffitt was headed to Maritime International in Bangor where Bjornson and Whitney reportedly tried to sell the stolen coins but store employees refused the purchase and called police.
A Kenduskeag man suffered minor injuries after the car he was driving rolled over on Pushaw Road in Glenburn late Tuesday night.
The accident occurred about 10:25 p.m. at a curve in the road near 1018 Pushaw Road as John Ewer, 34, of Kenduskeag was heading north. He told State Trooper Marc Poulin that he had seen a deer run across the road and lost control of the car. The vehicle drove into a ditch and rolled over, landing on its roof in the northbound lane as well as covering part of the southbound lane and scattering debris.
Ewer was treated inside the G&H Ambulance for what Poulin said were lacerations. Ewer had been drinking that night, Poulin reported, and a blood sample was taken to determine his blood-alcohol content. The Glenburn Fire Department rerouted traffic including stopping northbound traffic at the Church Road.
