PITTSFIELD – A couple on vacation from Colorado and headed to Bar Harbor escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon in a fiery crash off Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.

Herbert Stump, 58, and his wife, Diane Stump, 56, both of Aurora, Colo., were traveling north between Pittsfield and Newport when Herbert Stump apparently fell asleep about 1:45 p.m.

Maine State Police Trooper Philip Pushard said the couple’s 2004 PT Cruiser struck the end of a guardrail, went into the median and crashed into a tree. The car then caught on fire.

The pair were able to escape unaided from the demolished car. It was destroyed by fire.

The Stumps were taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital. Diane Stump was treated for neck pain and released.

Pushard said the two were wearing seat belts and that no charges will be filed. He was assisted at the scene by the Pittsfield and Newport fire departments.
