Fibromyalgia Support Group

BANGOR – The Fibromyalgia Support Group will hold a workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Healthsouth, 12 Stillwater Ave., in Bangor. Katherine Kates will introduce participants to meditation in motion.

The exercises Kates will teach are slow, simple body movements that allow meditation and to pay attention and be open to the present moment. Meditations in motion aid in increasing energy, flexibility and balance.

Kates has taught tai chi, an ancient Chinese practice of meditation in motion, for many years. She continues to study at the Tree of Life Tai Chi Center in Somerville, Mass. She also teaches classes at various venues in the Bangor area. To learn more about the workshop, call Kates at 945-5827.

Public seminar

The Acadia Hospital is offering a seminar for parents, teachers and others who work with children from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the hospital. The topic is easily frustrated children.

Attendees will learn about the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach and how it can be used with chronically inflexible children.

The program presenter will be Dr. J. Stuart Ablon, co-author of “The Explosive Child.”

Vaccination clinic canceled

ORRINGTON – Town health officer Lois-Ann Holmes wishes to advise residents that Orrington’s influenza and pneumonia vaccination clinic set for 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the First United Methodist Church, Center Drive, has been canceled due to the nationwide shortage of flu vaccine.

Women’s health screening

BANGOR – In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Penquis Community Action Program Penobscot Breast and Cervical Coalition, in coordination with the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, will sponsor a free women’s health screening day. St. Joseph’s Breast Care Center, Penquis CAP Health Services Bangor, Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center and Penobscot Community Health Center will hold a screening from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3.

If you are a woman between the ages of 40-64 years, have limited or no insurance coverage and meet certain income guidelines, you will qualify for the screening program. The free screening will include a mammogram, clinical breast exam and a PAP-pelvic exam.
