PORTLAND – Police chiefs, wives of the candidates, and prom queens. Everyone’s coming out to support the candidates for president.
As Election Day quickly approaches, Democrats and Republicans are picking up the pace to get the message out with both sides sending a stream of surrogates to Maine hoping to grab the last of the undecided voters.
Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik appeared Friday to support President Bush. In a news conference near Portland’s waterfront, Kerik said the idea that John Kerry could become president scares him.
“There has never been a more important election in this country, and I urge people in Maine to go look at the record,” said Kerik, the ever-present figure behind former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Several events also were scheduled supporting Kerry.
The Slacker Uprising Tour held a rally in Portland’s Monument Square. Michael Moore, whose “Fahrenheit 9/11” was critical of the Bush family’s ties to the Saudi royal family, had planned to appear but canceled because of a family emergency.
Elizabeth Edwards also traveled through Maine Friday on a two-day trip through the state, stopping at Waterville High School.
The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards also planned to stop Saturday in Auburn at Wallingford’s Apple Orchard.
And who can forget the prom queens?
A group of Kerry supporters have gathered every Friday on Portland’s Back Cove dressed in prom dresses. Celeste Bard, who organized the event, said their intentions were clear.
“We are protesting in prom dresses because we just thought that sometimes it’s difficult for women to get attention,” Bard said. “We’re protesting, but we’re also trying to have a sense of humor about it.”
