Washburn upsets Machias 3-2 Van Buren, Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Ellsworth post victories

MACHIAS – Steven Pesut notched the game-tying goal with 1:21 left in regulation and game-winning goal in the fourth overtime as No. 7 Washburn upended the No. 2 Machias Bulldogs, 3-2, in Class D quarterfinal boys soccer action Friday.

Zach Bird also scored unassisted for 12-3-1 Washburn. Jason Thompson made 13 saves on 16 shots.

Chase Ross and Patrick McDonald each scored a goal for 12-1 Machias, the defending Class D state champions. Isaiah Roberts added an assist. Marcus Frutchey faced eight shots, saving five.

Class D

Lee 3, Shead 0

At Lee, Everett Houghton, Doob Dow, and Jake Kang each netted a goal as the No. 1 Pandas topped No. 8 Shead of Eastport.

Rick Kim added an assist for 14-1 Lee. Kris King and Cameron Hamilton combined to save four of eight shots.

Craig Hastings made 18 saves on 35 shots for the 10-6 Tigers.

Bangor Christian 2, Greenville 1

At Greenville, Ignacio Bustos scored the second of his two goals with 1:17 left in the game to lead No. 6 Bangor Christian by No. 3 Greenville.

Bustos launched a shot from just outside the 18-yard line into the goal’s upper right corner.

He scored his first goal with 27:10 left, but Greenville answered about nine minutes later when Durgin McKusick scored unassisted.

Aaron Wilson made seven saves on 21 shots for 12-3-1 BC, and Brandon Lavigne made seven saves on 14 shots for 13-2 Greenville.

Van Buren 1, So. Aroostook 0

At Dyer Brook, Kyle Chase scored off a rebound as he led the No. 5 Crusaders past No. 4 Southern Aroostook.

Andrew Taylor stopped all 11 shots he faced for 14-2 Van Buren.

Jeff Boutilier faced 13 shots for the Warriors, saving all but one.

Class B

Ellsworth 4, Caribou 0

At Ellsworth, Jensen Rich scored a goal and had two assists to lead No. 1 Ellsworth over No. 8 Caribou.

Dem Katsiaficas scored a goal and assisted on another for 12-1-2 Ellsworth. Noah Jordan and Duncan Crowley each added a goal, and Taylor Wentworth had an assist. Cory Smith stopped three of five shots.

Brad Ala made eight saves on 19 shots for the 8-8 Vikings.

Wildcats 4, Windjammers 0

At Presque Isle, Greg Whitaker shot in three goals for second-seeded Presque Isle.

Nate Carter added a goal and an assist for 13-2 Wildcats. Chris Carlin had two assists and Brad Baker stopped all 11 shots he saw.

Andrew Rogers totaled 18 saves on 22 shots for No. 7 Camden Hills (10-6).

Fort Kent 1, MDI 0 (3OT)

At Fort Kent, Gib Michaud scored the game winning goal with 2:46 left in triple overtime as the No. 4 Warriors gained the win over No. 5 MDI.

Derrick Plourd saved all 13 shots he faced for 9-4-2 Fort Kent. The 7-6-2 Trojans’ Max Blanford made 13 saves on 20 shots.

Winslow 1, Hermon 0

At Winslow, Colin Hay scored off a centering pass from Oren Smith with 15:14 to play in the first half to give No. 3 Winslow the win.

Tyler Lavasseur made three saves on seven shots for the 13-1-1 Black Raiders.

Corey Stanhope saved eight of 13 shots for the No. 6 Hawks, who finished 9-7.

Class C

Dexter 2, Washington Acad. 0

At Dexter, Rick Stewart scored two unassisted goals to clinch the win for the fourth-ranked Tigers over fifth-ranked Washington Academy of East Machias.

Sam Bowers faced 10 shots and made eight saves for 8-6-1 Dexter.

Jeremy Gray made 14 saves on 21 shots for the 11-3 Raiders.

Piscataquis 1, Schenck 0

At Guilford, Brandon London scored the lone goal 20:16 into the first half for No. 3 Piscataquis.

Ryan Martell saved 14 of 18 shots for the 8-6-1 Pirates.

Will Hamlin made 22 saves on 28 shots for the No. 6 Wolverines of East Millinocket (6-9-1).

GSA 5, Penobscot Valley 3

At Blue Hill, Blake Wessel assisted on four out of five goals for the top-ranked Eagles.

Seth Brayton, Tyler Cousins, Casey Govoni, Timmy Carter, and Danny Moran each scored a goal for 12-2-1 George Stevens Academy. Collin Henry and Mark Ensworth combined to save half of the 10 shots to come their way.

Matt Cummings had a hat trick for the No. 8 Howlers (6-9-1) of Howland, while Josh Ireland made 10 saves on 23 shots.

Central 6, Madawaska 0

At Corinth, Tyler Levesque netted three goals as he led the second-seeded Red Devils to a win over 10th-seeded Madawaska.

Matt Bosse, Billy Roy, and Paul Roy had a goal apiece for 8-5-2 Central. Charles Haney faced 23 shots and saved 14.

Paul Michaud made 18 saves on 25 shots for the 7-7-2 Owls.

Girls soccer

Class D

Lee 8, Shead 0

At Lee, Shelby Pickering led the top-seeded Pandas with four goals and two assists as they topped No. 8 Shead of Eastport.

Jodi Worcester landed a goal and an assist, while Brooke Harris, Kimmy Thurlow, and Aarika Ritchie each had a goal. Jackie Moors and Pickering combined to make two saves on three shots for 15-0 Lee.

Brittany Cox faced 26 shots and stopped 13 for the 7-8-1 Tigerettes.
