HAMPDEN – Isabel Cravens had the ball on her foot, no defender in sight, the goal fast approaching and an Eastern Maine Class A girls’ soccer quarterfinal in the balance as nightfall arrived Saturday.
Too much going on, and no time to think. You think?
Actually there was plenty of time to both think and shoot for Cravens, a junior whose goal with 3:16 left in the match lifted Hampden Academy to a 3-2 victory over Bangor.
Cravens got the ball in an advantageous position after teammate Annaliese Lafayette blocked a Bangor pass near midfield and passed the ball ahead to Cravens. No defender could catch her as she sped down the field, leaving only Bangor goalie Ilyse Angst to challenge the play.
Cravens won that battle, and Hampden completed its comeback from a 2-1 halftime deficit.
“Annaliese gave me a great pass, and I thought to myself this was it,” said Cravens. “I just shot; we’ve been working on pointed-toe shots and that helped. I was glad the goalie came out.”
Lili Berube scored two goals for the Broncos, one with 10:09 left to tie the match, as the No. 2 Broncos (11-3-1) advanced to host No. 3 Lewiston in a regional semifinal Wednesday.
No. 7 Bangor ends its season at 10-6, with three of the losses coming against Hampden.
Coach Dewey Martin’s Broncos finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots, with Rebecca Workman making seven stops – including a diving effort on a bid by Bangor’s Erin Healey less than a minute after Cravens’ goal – in support of a Hampden defense led by junior Jenna Shue. Angst made six saves for Bangor.
“We just picked up the intensity in the second half, everyone worked so hard,” said Lafayette. “In the first half I think everybody was trying hard, but we just weren’t putting our passes together, but in the second half everything started to click.”
Berube won the race to a high bouncing ball near the edge of the penalty area and scored seven minutes into the match to give Hampden a 1-0 lead, but Bangor scored the next two goals.
Erin MacDermott tied the game with 18:45 left in the period. An Emily Heath throw-in from the right sideline bounded through the goal area without anyone gaining possession until it reached MacDermott on the far side, and she kicked a low shot just inside the left goalpost.
A collision between Berube and Bangor’s Rachel Roberts forced a stoppage in play with 34 seconds left in the half. When Bangor got possession on the subsequent restart near midfield, the Rams took advantage. Marion Bradford kicked the ball ahead to Hannah Bennett, who popped up an entry pass to the left side. Rams’ junior Serena Dubois, the tallest player in the area, got to the ball first as it bounced high off the artificial field and headed it into the net to give Bangor the lead with 22 seconds left.
The Rams nursed that lead for much of the second half as Hampden began to apply more and more offensive pressure.
Berube scored the tying goal after Lafayette sent a direct kick from 40 yards out into the goal crease, initially to midfielder Hannah Growe.
“Hannah was right in front of the goal and the ball was in front of her, and I sort of took it from her,” said Berube. “I shot it, it rebounded off someone else and it hit off the lower part of my leg and went in the goal.”
