Coffin sparks Eagles’ defeat of MMA

CASTINE – Shane Coffin started the scoring for Husson off an assist from Kyle James in the 21st minute and sparked the Eagles of Bangor to a 6-0 men’s soccer shutout of Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday.

Chris Cacela headed a cross from Tom Nevue Jr. past the MMA ‘keeper a minute later. Klinton Zhemali followed, scoring off a pass from Oscar Oly. Nevue scored two more goals with assists from Coffin and Cacela. Oly capped the scoring.

Matt Goodman had two saves for 8-5-1 Husson. Josh Heath had eight saves for the 3-11-2 Mariners.

Colby 7, St. Joseph (Vt.) 0

At Waterville, Bobby Abendroth had two goals and two assists in powering Colby to a 7-0 win.

Will Kinder contributed two more goals and Daniel Kiernan had a goal and an assist. Michael Butler and John McCormack had the final two goals for the 5-6-2 Mules. Josh Kahane made three saves on four shots.

Brian White saved 10 of 26 shots for 6-11-1 St. Joseph of Vermont.

Women’s soccer

Colby 2, Southern Maine 1

At Gorham, Christina Andaya scored a pair of goals 1:54 apart midway through the second half to lift the Mules.

Katie McCabe, Kara McCabe and Katie Austgen were credited with an assist apiece. Liza Benson faced seven shots and saved all but one for 7-5-1 Colby.

Liz Brunton’s goal gave the 7-6-4 Huskies an first-half. Marcy Ansley stopped three of 16 shots.

UMM 7, St. Joseph (Vt.) 1

At Machias, Erin O’Callahan netted three goals and made two assist for the No. 1 Clippers as they beat out No. 4 St. Joseph’s of Vermont in the Sunrise Conference semifinals.

Shelley Hayden also contributed three goals, while Christina Rich had one goal and three assists. Sarah Ricker also had an assist for 11-4 UMaine-Machias. Angela Qualey made five saves on seven shots.

Molly Neider scored the lone goal for 2-14 St. Joe’s with an assist from Elizabeth Arbelaez. Kate Chase faced 24 shots, stopping 15.

Volleyball

Maine 3, New Hampshire 1

At Durham, N.H., the Black Bears downed the Wildcats 30-27, 30-27, 22-30, 30-20.

Kaili Jordan led 11-9 Maine with 12 kills and 18 digs. Shelly Seipp made 49 assists, and Jody Connacher had 17 digs. Carmen Morgan made 14 kills, and Leah Guidinger made 10.

Katie Weidner made 44 assist, Toni Barnas made 19 kills, and Jen Williams had 20 digs for 6-17 New Hampshire.
