MARTIN EARLY
Earley, a junior forward for the Hampden Academy boys soccer team, has scored five goals in three playoff games to lead the Broncos to the Eastern Maine Class A final. Earley had three goals and an assist in a preliminary-round win against Skowhegan, scored the game-winning goal in a quarterfinal victory against Bangor, and added another goal as No. 5 Hampden knocked off top seed Waterville 4-0 in Tuesday’s semifinals. Earley has 28 goals this season for the 16-0-1 Broncos.
Small School (Classes C-D)
MARDY SIMON
Simon, a senior running back for the Orono football team, rushed for 246 yards and five touchdowns on 14 carries as the Red Riots earned their sixth straight victory Friday with a 59-28 win against Maranacook of Readfield. Simon surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season for Orono, now 7-1 on the season.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
CASSIE HINTZ
Hintz a junior cross country runner for Old Town, smashed another course record this season as she outpaced the field at the Eastern Maine championships in Belfast. Hintz’s time of 17 minutes, 48 seconds erased the old record of 18:34. Her efforts let the Indians to a second-place finish behind John Bapst of Bangor in a very close meet.
Small School (Classes C-D)
SHELBY PICKERING
Pickering, a senior at Lee Academy, scored four goals in a 8-0 win over Shead in a Class D quarterfinal soccer game on Friday. On Saturday she finished third at the Eastern Maine cross country championships in Belfast. Pickering was one of five Pandas who finished in the top eight to lead Lee to the Class D title.
