Pumpkins in the Park

Pumpkins in the Park, a family oriented event, will be held at the newly renovated grandstand at Bangor Raceway 3:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.

Activities will include best jack-o’-lantern contests, hay rides, a bounce house, clowns, kettle corn and face painting.

Contestants ages 13 to 30 are eligible for these prizes donated by the Ski Rack:

. First place, Madshus Numedal cross country skis, value $260.

. Second place, Axis Charger Junior Snowboard, value $200.

. Third place, Overland waist-fanny pack, value $80.

Contestants ages 12 and under are eligible for these prizes donated by Abacus, The Learning Store:

. First place, pottery wheel, by Curiosity Kids, electric wheel with tools and clay.

. Second place, solid wood Labyrinth game, by Fundex Games.

. Third place, 100-piece puzzle by Ravensburger.

A $250 prize will be awarded for the best pumpkin patch. Scout groups and classrooms are participating in this group category.

Penn National Gaming president Kevin DeSanctis gave UCP of Maine executive director Bobbi Jo Yeager a check for $14,000 to sponsor Pumpkins in the Park, UCP of Maine’s 50th anniversary and other UCP projects.

UCP will hold its 50th anniversary dinner dance Nov. 19, and Penn National Gaming will cover the cost of this event.

City Council candidates

Eight candidates are running for three three-year terms on the City Council, to be decided in the Nov. 2 election. The candidates are:

Polling places in Bangor will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m on Election Day.

The City Clerk’s office is open for absentee voting weekday hours and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 30.

Pantheon party and concert

The Pantheon Party at the Parthenon, a costume party in which participants come dressed as a favorite god or goddess, will be held 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 120 Park St. Dance music will be provided by DJ “Pan” Demonium.

The cost of the party is $12 per person and includes Greek finger food, gourmet desserts and beverages. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes.

The party is sponsored by the Iseum Musicum, a three-year program of study affiliated with the Temple of the Feminine Divine in Bangor. The event is chem- and smoke-free.

Before the party, Women with Wings, directed by Linda Koehler, will present a concert at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Admission is a $5 donation.

Halloween party

The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Halloween party for children in kindergarten through fifth grade from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28. Activities include games, prizes, a costume contest and a haunted house. For information, call 992-4490.

Downtown art tour

More than two dozen artists will open their studios to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Tickets cost $7 and are available in advance at BookMarc’s, the Grasshopper Shop, or the day of the tour.

Produced by Bangor Center for six consecutive years, the event showcases visual artists who are part of downtown Bangor’s arts and cultural scene.

Participating artists include: Mari Abercrombie, Ken Brooks, Sally Lesko Bates, Charles Bennett, Fran Clukey, Kristen Eckmann, Sarah Faragher, Peg Hanson, Ed Healy, Tree Heckler, JoAnne Houlsen, Annaliese Jakimedes, Nina Jerome, Jan Kaufman, Edwin Martin, Linda Packard, Aquelidio M. Rodrigues, Kenneth Schiano, Janice May Scott, Tracey Silva, Linda Stearns, Ralph Weeks, Kristine Welch and Kristborg T. Whitney.

Work by advanced art students from Bangor High School also will be shown.

Downtown Photo Show

Produced by Bangor Center, the fourth annual Downtown Photo Show will be on exhibit during November and December at Bangor Frameworks, 175 Exchange St.

Bangor Center and Bangor Frameworks will host an opening reception 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Bangor Frameworks.

Jurors will give a gallery talk at the opening, and prizes will be announced. After December, the show will travel to the Bangor Museum and Center for History, 6 State St.; to the By Design gallery on Harlow Street; and finally to Bangor City Hall.

Conference on menopause

The Women Sharing Knowledge and Power: Let’s Talk about Menopause conference will be held 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Wellman Commons, Bangor Theological Seminary.

Sponsored by Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center, the conference will offer panelists discussing physiological, cultural and spiritual aspects of menopause.

A morning panel will focus on the clinical and physiological aspects of menopause, with an extended question and answer period with panelists.

An afternoon panel will focus on the cultural and spiritual aspects of menopause, with attention to natural therapies, followed by small group conversation circles.

The fee is $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

All are welcome. Pay what you can, and participate even if you cannot pay. Individuals who donate more than the registration fee will be honored as Sister Supporters.

Wellman Commons is handicapped accessible, and free on-site child care will be available.

Veterans’ massage

In appreciation for veterans’ service to the country, staff at River City Therapy Association, 229 State St., will provide free 15-minute massages to veterans noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. Therapists will provide chair or table massages.

Child care training

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer Starting Your Core Knowledge Portfolio workshop for child care professionals from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 6, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. Workshop topics will include procedures for documenting learning, orientation to the Maine Professional Registry, introduction to the child development associate certificate and how to keep track of hours of training.

Male Vocalist of the Year

Bangor native Howie Day was a big winner at this year’s Boston Music Awards. The BMA program, which took place at the Avalon Ballroom in Boston, included a special awards ceremony honoring the region’s top musicians from a variety of musical styles. The awards program was followed by a two-hour live concert featuring top local musicians and BMA award nominees.

Howie Day received an award for Male Vocalist of the Year.

“It is exciting to have so many people from the music community come together to honor the depth and breadth of musical talent that New England has to offer,” said Chip Rives, BMA executive director. “This region has always been fertile ground for developing major recording artists and this year’s crop of winners is no exception.”

The mission of the Boston Music Awards is to celebrate the music that is produced by artists with strong ties to the New England region. The event encompasses a variety of musical styles, highlighting the diversity and culture of music from the area.

Missionary to La Romana

Joshua Peppard, a mission volunteer for Columbia Street Baptist Church, will spend six months beginning in December as a volunteer coordinator in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Peppard has been going to La Romana every year since 1993 on short-term mission trips. His home church will help sponsor this mission, which will cost a total of $18,500, including project expenses.

Individuals and groups who would like to support the mission are asked to send contributions in care of Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia St. Funds raised in excess of the goal will benefit the La Romana mission.

City Council candidates

Five candidates are running for two seats on the City Council, to be decided in the Nov. 2 election. The candidates are:

Talent show and auction

A talent show and auction starring Maine humorist and musician Joe Bennett will be held 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, North Main and Holyoke streets.

Also featured will be the Bangor Fiddlers, professional clowns and many singers and dancers.

Auction items include a massage from Skylight Spa, a haircut from Skylight Spa, membership to ATA Black Belt Academy, a women’s health evening with the Doctor, a house blessing, a clown for a party and Pete’s moustache.

Tickets are $5, or $15 for a family. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Carmel

Kindergarten screening

A free developmental screening conducted by Child Development Services-Penobscot County will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Carmel Elementary School. The screening is for area 3- and 4-year-old children and for 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten. To schedule an appointment, call 947-8493, ext. 17.

Kenduskeag

Haunted house

Kenduskeag’s Halloween haunted house, billed as the scariest ever, will be held 7-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30, at Cole Memorial Ball Field on Kenduskeag-Levant Road. The event is recommended for ages 10 and up. Admission is $5.

Selectmen candidates

Three candidates are running for two seats on the Levant Board of Selectmen, to be decided in the Nov. 2 election. Candidates are:

Halloween stories

A reading of Halloween stories by John Chisholm for children ages 4-10 will be held 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at Levant Heritage Library.

Costumes are encouraged, and refreshments will be supplied.

Orono

Video on early days

The Orono History Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the Orono Town Council chambers on Main Street.

The program will be a video of an elderly citizen being interviewed about the early days of Orono. Officials called it an incredibly sensitive documentation very skillfully done. The video will give those attending an insight into the past and the skills required for such interviews.

A business meeting will follow the video presentaion.

Planned giving

Eastern Maine Medical Center, Acadia Hospital, Bangor Area Visiting Nurses and Eastern Maine Charities will offer a luncheon program about planned giving from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Penobscot Valley Country Club. Ken Hews, president of Eastern Maine Charities will serve as host.

During the presentation, James A. Macleod, senior vice president and senior trust officer for Bangor Savings Bank, will facilitate a panel discussion. Panelists will include Calvin True, of Eaton Peabody; Lee Chick, certified public accountant, of Berry Dunn McNeil and Parker; and Chris Farley, financial representative, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Discussion topics will include the general principles of estate planning, trusts, power of attorney, wills, charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts.

Participants at the event will be given time to ask questions pertaining to discussion topics.

Winterport

Planning meeting

A meeting to plan the 37th annual presentation of the Nativity will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Winterport Baptist Church, Back Winterport Road. The meeting will last about an hour and consists of assigning minor jobs to volunteers.
