Horse breeding clinic set at UM

ORONO – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the University of Maine Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is sponsoring an Equine Breeding Management Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the University of Maine, Bangor Room in the Memorial Union in Orono.

The day will open with a talk about the UMaine Equine Program by Dr. Alan Kezis, UMaine Department of Agriculture Resource Economics. A discussion of the economics of the horse breeding industry will be presented by Dr. Jim Leiby, UMaine Department of Resource Economics and Policy Development.

An overview of reproductive anatomy, pregnancy and foaling will be given by Dr. Robert Causey, UMaine Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. Dr. Causey also will discuss breeding problems of the mare and stud.

Dr. Jim Weber, of the UMaine Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences will discuss nutrition of the mare and foal, and breeding options with the mare.

A local equine veterinarian will present recommendations for preventative management of breeding issues through vaccinations and biosecurity. Program participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of all speakers in a round-table discussion.

A tour of the UMaine equine facilities at the Witter Center is planned after the clinic.

The registration fee is $10 and includes workshop materials, program costs and refreshments.

Lunch will be available at the Memorial Union Market Place. Some scholarships are available for those unable to pay the registration fee. Ten percent of the registration fee will be contributed to the UMaine Animal Science Student Fund.
