Westgate Manor to mark 15th year of Alzheimer’s unit

BANGOR – Westgate Manor will celebrate its 15th year of caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease with an open house and health fair Saturday, Nov. 13, at 750 Union St. The schedule is:

. 1:30 p.m., Family Council meeting for families of residents.

. 2 p.m., Dr. Penny Lamhut, board certified in geriatrics, presenting “Memory Loss: The Importance of Medical Assessment and Treatment Options.”

. 3 p.m., Dr. Lucie Arbuthnot, Maine Alzheimer’s Association, presenting “Maintain Your Brain.”

Activities will include blood drive, blood pressure screening, body mass index screening and wellness booths by the Eastern Agency on Aging, AARP, Maine Medicare Education Partnership Program, Maine Alzheimer’s Association, Coastal Med Tech for the Great American Smoke Out and Janssen Pharmaceutical Inc.

In 1989, Westgate Manor started its first unit specializing in the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Over the years, the manor has developed into a continuum of care facility.

In 1996, the whole facility converted to the care of people with Alzheimer’s, allowing Westgate to provide services to people in need of assisted living level of care, long-term care and skilled nursing care.

Community-based services have included an Alzheimer’s Association sponsored support group since 1991, and a complementary service called Connecting with Caregivers, which provides individualized education and resource information.

In 2000, the Adult Day Program at Westgate Manor was opened.
