Colby nips Bates on blocked PAT Civitello’s effort preserves victory

LEWISTON – Mike Civitello blocked an extra-point attempt by Bates’ Tyler Schmelz with 15 seconds remaining Saturday, helping preserve Colby’s 17-16 New England Small College Athletic Conference football victory over the Bobcats.

Chris Bashaw ran for 102 yards and scored two touchdowns to help Colby College of Waterville win the opener of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series.

Bradshaw scored first on a 4-yard run with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter. He scored again in the third quarter by nabbing a 15-yard strike from quarterback Justin Smith (15-for-23, 154 yards) to bring Colby’s lead to 14-3.

Colby’s John Goss followed Bradshaw’s second touchdown with an 18-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter to bring the score to 17-3.

Bates’ Brandon Colon (28-for-52, 294 yards) rallied in the fourth quarter to put 13 points on the board, once on a 1-yard run and again with a 3-yard pass to Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Dylan MacNamara had nine catches for 93 yards for Bates and Matt Orlando made eight for 85 yards.

Westfield 17, Maine Maritime 14

CASTINE – Former University of Maine backup quarterback Jon Meczywor threw for 298 yards and one touchdown Saturday as Westfield State beat Maine Maritime Academy 17-14 in a New England Football Conference game at Ritchie Field.

Pat Bard’s 2-yard touchdown run put Maine Maritime on the board with 14:10 remaining in the first quarter, but Westfield scored on a 1-yard run from Mark Puhalski and again with an 11-yard pass from Meczywor to David Trueira before the end of the quarter.

MMA tied the game before the half with a 5-yard run from Chelsea Allen. Westfield took the final 17-14 lead in the third quarter on a 37-yard field goal from Garrett Davis.

Westfield’s defense held Maritime to only 13 first downs and 44 passing yards. Bard carried 26 times for 103 yards and Scott Labbe netted 82 yards for the Mariners.

The Owls’ B.J. Holleran made 12 catches for 139 yards.

Wesleyan 25, Bowdoin 21

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Zach Librizzi completed 24 of 41 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns to lead Wesleyan to a 25-21 come-from-behind win over Bowdoin Saturday.

The game-winner was a 7-yard TD pass from Librizzi to Blake Curry with 2:25 left in the game.

Wesleyan was trailing 14-0 late in the second quarter after Bowdoin got a 5-yard run from Matt Boyd in the first period and 23-yard scoring strike from quarterback Mike Ferrante to Brian Durant in the second.

Wesleyan scored with 27 seconds left in the first half when Librizzi hooked up with Sam Fletcher for a 16-yard TD pass. The score was set up after Wesleyan recovered a muffed punt.

In the third quarter, Librizzi hit Fletcher again with a 21-yard touchdown pass, then found James Wallace from 12 yards out to give Wesleyan the lead. Bowdoin countered with a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Ahron Cohen early in the fourth quarter to briefly regain the lead.
