GSA edges Madawaska in ‘C’ Brunswick blanks Lewiston to claim 3rd ‘A’ title in five years

The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team got penalty-kick goals from Laura Overton, Robin Rioux and Sadie Beardsworth as the Eagles of Blue Hill edged Madawaska 4-2 for the Eastern Maine Class C championship Saturday.

Brunswick won the Eastern Maine Class A championship with a 2-0 win over Lewiston.

George Stevens faces North Yarmouth Academy for the state title next Saturday.

Overton, a freshman, made the final penalty kick. All three kicks went into the lower left corner of the goal.

“She’s got ice water in her veins,” GSA coach Steve Bemiss said of Overton. “… She’s young but she’s everything you could want in a player.”

Madawaska’s Kelly Chasse gave the Owls a lead 6:46 into the game when she took a pass from Beth Gerard and scored on a breakaway. GSA’s Chelsea Duddy tied it for the Eagles when she found the ball in a scramble and put a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.

“I thought it was a very hard-fought game,” Bemiss said. “It was just back and forth.”

Sarah Nadeau made a penalty kick for Madawaska. Both goalies had fine games as Liz Laplante stopped 15 of 17 shots for Madawaska and GSA’s Kayla Eaton made 16 saves on 20 shots.

Bemiss said Eaton had a particularly spectacular save on Madawaska’s third penalty-kick attempt as she went horizontal in the air to tip the ball, which hit the inside of the right post and bounced out of danger.

In Class A, the Dragons claimed their third regional title in five years as Stephanie Rendall scored the eventual game-winning goal with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Kate Ross scored an insurance goal with less than a minute left in the game.
