MACHIAS – Greely High of Cumberland Center successfully defended its state volleyball champion Saturday, defeating Mount Desert Island 3-0 in the state final at the University of Maine-Machias.
The No. 1 seed Rangers, who completed a 17-0 season, had match scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-23 against the Trojans.
MDI (14-3) was the No. 3 seed and gained its berth in the state final via an upset of No. 2 Woodland, which was gunning for a seventh-straight appearance in the state final match. The Dragons (14-1) won three straight titles from 2000 to 2002.
The Trojans beat Woodland 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-13).
Greely defeated No. 4 Gorham 3-0 (25-14, 25-5, 25-8) in their semifinal. The Rams finished their season at 12-4.
Michelle Robb led the Rangers with 18 assists. Erica Davis had nine kills and six digs, while Bethany Carle chipped in with five kills and four digs.
Greely is 32-0 in the past two years.
